Internals - Are they done weekly?
I'm 38 w, 5d and just came back from Drs office. They didn't do an internal - they did one last week. When I asked why they don't do them weekly, the Dr said "you are not going to spontaneously dilate... We will do another internal next week."
umm, hellowww - how about for my piece of mind - every little freaking twinge, I think I'm dilating or at least effacing. and I can't wait for the baby to be born - so why keep me guess for 2 weeks. I mean it takes him 10 secs to do the internal.
Does everyone get internals every other week? I thought some girls got them weekly...

That sounds strange to me. My doctor does weekly internals. She said that things could change very suddenly, meaning that one day I could be completely closed and then dilated the next. That's why I'm surprised that your doctor would say that you wouldn't "spontaneously dilate."

ITA - you could go from nothing to 3cm is a matter of a day or two... that's an odd comment for a doctor to make.

Honestly, internals don't mean much. You could go from 1cm to full labor or be 3cm and wait weeks. I wouldn't stress over it.

My good friend's OB NEVER did internals. I got them every week from 37 weeks on.
I am  about the doctor saying you won't spontaneously dilate? Isn't that how MOST dilation occurs?

I thought that was the whole point of these weekly visits in the last month.

I know! I'm just so frustrated with this office. I always have an issue when I go there. (some trivial, and some bigger deals) I have a list of reasons why I'm going to change drs. I wish i had changed 5 weeks ago when I first thought about doing it. now its def too late.
As soon as I'm finished with this PG I'll change.

Sorry you are dealing with doctor issues.
They def should have done an internal. I thought that was part of the point when you hit "weekly visit" status.

With my DS my doctor didn't start doing internals until 39 weeks. They said there's really no point because you can walk around partially dilated for weeks or you can be 0cm one day and have the baby the next. I know you want to know, but they don't really mean much.

I got my first around 35-36 weeks, and pretty much had 1-2 a week until I gave birth. I was contracting for a while so maybe that is why. But I had an internal the night before DD was due and I was 2.5 cm the next morning I was 3.5 and had her that day! I was 38w6d when she was born. So you can dilate over night!
