Spinoff - would you ever GIFT a fake to someone?
So, some of us are okay with buying fakes and others are not. Here's my follow-up question - would you ever buy someone a fake bag or fake jewelry (like an imitation Hermes bracelet) as a gift? Does it depend more on whether you personally endorse fakes or whether the other person does?
I ask this because it's come up in 2 situations recently:
1) I was visiting a relative and noticed her cute LV bag. She said, "oh my secretaries got it for me as a birthday gift. It's a fake."
It was a good replica, but it was still an imitation - would you give an imitation to your boss if you knew they didn't have a problem wearing fakes?
2) My friend knew I wanted the pave diamond Chanel "CC" earrings but I couldn't find them anywhere. She found an imitation pair on the street somewhere and was going to give them to me as a gift. She got them home and tried them on herself (don't even get me started on that) and noticed that the crystals were already coming out, so she didn't give them to me.
I was fine with it because I wanted the real ones anyway (even though I still haven't found them) since I have pretty severe allergies to the metals used in a lot of cheap jewelry. But, I'm not a person who wears imitation bags or jewelry - I did accidently buy a fake Kate Spade bag once but I was 20 and didn't know any better. I just thought it was on sale ... until I noticed that the label said KaDe SpaTe. Oops.

To answer your question, no I would never give a fake/replica gift. Either I'd get them the real deal or do my best to find a quality item that I thought would be a good substitute and something they would really like.

I got a fake Kate Spade once, and when it was handed to me the giver said "It's real" - I'm not really into bags, but even I could tell that a real Kate Spade bag had better stitching and that the label wouldn't be glued on all crooked like.
