Re: Prenatal Massage

Hmm - so I just called the place I usually go to and they said they won't give me a massage without a doctor's note. Anyone heard of that?

Do you mean if you are later in your pg? I have the same question!

I'm 32 weeks but I have a gift cert that I haven't used.

I don't want to do anything that will make me go into labor!!

Re: Prenatal Massage

I asked my doctor this at my 8 week appt. She said that there is really no reason I couldn't have a massage in the 1st trimester (provided I go to a masseuse licensed in prenatal massages). But, she did say that it would be very hard for me to find a spa that would give a massage in the first trimester. For liability purposes, they won't do it until afterwards.

I'm not pregnant, but I just got my best friend a GC for a pregnancy massage at Maximus in Merrick.

I think Joseph Christopher Salon in Bellmore does them too ...

Re: Prenatal Massage

I have had two so far and they have been incredible. I usually go when my leg/hip/butt acts up and I walk out of the office feeling like a million bucks.

I go to a massage therapy place run by RN's - like a wellness center, I guess.

Re: Prenatal Massage

It is unsafe:

- 1st trimester because of the higher risk of miscarriage (most places won't even massage you)
- high blood pressure
- high risk pregnancies
- history of miscarriages

Also:
- when you have M/S
- Fever
- decreased fetal movement for 24 hours

A lot of places will ask for a dr's note to make sure it is safe for you.

Re: Prenatal Massage

I get a 1/2 hour massage every week......which I started around 12 weeks. While i guess not technically considered "prenatal".........they don't specialize in that.........she had me lay on my side once the stomach wasn't comfy for me anymore (which started around 17 weeks). She will not massage past my lower back.......and only very light pressure there. She will use firmer pressure on my neck & shoulders though.

A place that does provide Prenatal massages will have the tables with belly openings and will do more for you!

I would call around or just get the Dr. note!! They are so worth it!
Enjoy it!

Sorry but I have to disagree wirh this statement.

You don't have to have tables with holes to be called prenatal massage. You can have a side lying massage and it's still a prenatal massage. Prenatal is the same as "pregnany" massage.

The person should be certified to do it. You have more training in the particular massage with contraindications, etc...

I should clarify that......there are SOME places that have these types of tables.........

I PERSONALLY feel that I get a better massage lying on my belly, so I am saving the Gift Cert. I have for later down the road to a place that DOES have these tables.
