TV Repair shops...thing of the past?
In my town (in NJ) there is an old fashioned TV repair shop. Everytime I pass it, I see the SAME old fashioned TVs sitting there...I'm talking circa 1975 - 1995 maybe...all dusty.
1) Do you think anyone actually gets their TV fixed anymore?
2) Do you think it could be a "front" for something else?
I never see anyone going in there. The rent in my town is not cheap. So it makes me wonder...

Re: TV Repair shops...thing of the past?
My aunt and my uncle owned a local TV Repair shop in Huntington Station. It was a mom and pop store. They were always busy for many years but they finally decided to close their doors in August 07 and retire. Everyone gets a warantee with a new tv from Best Buy, Circuit City, PC RIchards etc..and mom and pop stores aren't really around anymore.
They were great because they fixed EVERYTHING (computers, vcr, dvd, radios)
They were open for over 50 years. My uncles dad started the business in the 50's

Re: TV Repair shops...thing of the past?
the father of a high school friend of mine owns a "mom and pop" appliance store in the town where i grew up, and i believe they do repairs there as well. it's definitely not a front for anything i just think he's built a good business by word-of-mouth and the smaller size of the store appeals to older, or people who will take more personalized customer service over a lower price any day.

Nowadays it's so much cheaper to replace almost anything than to repair the same item.
I guess these stores are good for people who really want to keep their old appliances rather than replacing them with a newer, cheaper, and probably not-as-well-made version.
As for a front, maybe it is, maybe it isn't. You can use almost anything for a front.

OMG is that Blair's?????
I had my TV fixed there last year.. they were so very sweet and helpful with us.
Then all of a sudden we noticed the store was gone. Sorta bummed us out. They seemed like people we could depend on!
ETA: my TV blew the LCD Screen (it had a dark shadow I could see when it warmed up) it was under Best Buy's Warranty so Blair's fixed it. I got a whole new Screen (so basically a new TV) at NO COST! Pretty great since i had the TV for two years (HDTV LCD)
