Any thoughts?- so bummed...

So I went to the dr. this morning. I knew my dr was away, but the senior partner was there- so I figured he was just going to put me on provera anyway, so there was no point in waiting until my dr. got back--- this way I could start the provera and be that much closer to AF arriving by the time my dr got back.
Anyway, I asked him what the chances of my getting OHSS again were--- and he told me people w/ PCOS pretty much always get it. He then went on to try to push me towards IVF... which I don't think is an option right now, even if DH were to agree (which I'd have to talk to him about) because our insurance doesn't cover IVF, and we can't afford it right now.
Anyway, he really bummed me out. I was all ready to do another cycle w/ injections and IUI and he made me feel like there's no point. I'm waiting to hear if I've ovulated or not- if I haven't then I'm going on provera and if I have then he wants me to wait until AF arrives on her own (which could take forever!). He told me to set up an appointment next week w/ my dr... I feel like today was such a waste...Chat Icon
ETA: He also mentioned talking to my dr about 'changing it up a bit' if I do do another medicated IUI- using BCP and lupron--- has anyone ever heard of this for an IUI? I have for IVF but not IUI. TIA!

Re: Any thoughts?

I don't know much about injectibles, but its definitely not true that OHSS always happens to PCOSers. There is no way for them to adjust your dosage to try to avoid hyperstimming?

Thanks for your reply. That's what I thought--- I was hoping he'd say there was a chance I wouldn't hyperstim again... He said I should wait and talk to my dr b/c he thinks that only 1 dr should work on a 'case like this' (which I've said all along- though I've been getting bounced back and forth for months w/ whoever is there at the time of my appointment).
He was suggesting the dosage changes as well as adding birth control pills and/or lupron... which I haven't heard of using for IUIs before. I know they've been used for ppl doing IVF but was confused to hear him mention them for IUI. I'm still waiting to hear from them about my progesterone... to determine if I'm starting the provera or not. UGH- this whole process is so frustrating- I wish none of us had to go thru it! I'm JUSt starting back up and am already mega frustrated... Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Any thoughts?- so bummed...

Personally, I would consult with another RE.
First of all, you shouldn't have hyperstimmed last cycle at all. Secondly, I did eight IUI cycles in which I only hyperstimmed for one.
Thirdly, I did two IVF cycles and only hyperstimmed one of them.

Have you had your tubes checked (HSG)? If so, and they are clear and your only problem is PCOS, you should be able to get PG with IUI - not necessarily the first one since an IUI only increases your success rate from natural by 10%...but definitely an IUI should work at some point.

I agree with Gerty, I would get another opinion. It just seems like you are getting frustrated with the run around they are giving you.

As for hyperstimming, I would think they can dial down your doseage so you won't. Plus you should be monitored very closely so that if it looks like you are headed in that direction they can correct it. My guess about the BCP's would be to rest your ovaries so they are ready for the stims (same as with any IVF cycle) Since you respond too well to the stims the BCP's might make your ovaries respond a little slower and therefore lower your chanced of OHSS?? Again that's just my impression of that idea.

Thanks everyone Chat Icon I went out and did some shopping (which always makes me feel a little better Chat Icon )- I got a black peacoat which I've ALWAYS wanted (for 80% off Chat Icon ) and a beautiful red dress.
Anyway, I've decided I'm going to do another medicated cycle. I will talk to my dr. about lupron and BCPs as well as mention to him what the other dr said and what he thinks.
If this IUI doesn't work then I'll see where we're at and if it's time to see a different dr or what our next step will be. I mentally prepared myself to do this all over again... and I'm not going to let some dr. who isn't even my own
talk me out of it!
