what are your thoughts on the whaling practices of the Japanese
do you think they should be banned from whaling off the coast of their own country?
what about the fisherman who have made their livelihood from whaling for centuries?

Obviously the answer to these queries depends on where you stand with regard to the whaling issue as a whole. If you are anti-whaling then the plight of the fisherman and where the whaling is done should not be a concern to you at all.
If you are not anti-whaling, you may argue that whaling should be prohibited off the coasts of countries that are anti whaling (such as the US) but should be allowed in countries such as Japan.
Having said that - the world is pretty minute in the grand scheme of things and the waters that touch the beachs of California have also touched the coastline of Japan.
Are the whales smart enough to eventually get that the waters over there are potentially filled with a whole lot of men interesting it killing them? Do you think they might learn to hang closer to the shores of the US where the threats run closer to pollutants and discards from careless denizens?
I think you adapt or die. Fisherman and Whales alike.

I don't think it has anything to do with whales being smart. It's their instinct to travel certain waters at certain times of the year. You can't fight a mammal's instinct.
There are restrictions to how much the Japanese can whale. It's a known fact that the whales and sharks are being killed faster than they can reproduce. Especially since most whales/sharks don't reproduce until they are older in age. If they become extinct, then the ocean life balance will be completely thrown off.

I was kind of using the word smart and the idea of whales modifying their migration patterns in a facetious manner.
But I do think that you can alter mammalian instincts - it is how many species have adapted and survived. Of course at the rate of kill/consumption this modification would probably take longer than extinction.

Marlo- I think that they make a product that will help with your 5 o'clock shadow. It's made from blubber and baleen.

I think if you want that kind of look, then Japanese Whale Straightening would be your best bet.
I heard it lasts like 5 months.

Re: what are your thoughts on the whaling practices of the Japanese
I don't think it is necessary b/c they have 10 years worth of whales already frozen in their freezers (saw it on Foreign Correspondent- Australian TV show). I think it is even worse when they don't fish their waters.
Interesing topics, it is big news here.
