? about breeders that are far away
Not too far. I'm looking at and talking to a breeder of havanese puppies in Lafayette. However, that is quite a trip from eastern LI. She has agreed to meet us half-way, but that's not the problem. Whenever my parents have gone to a breeder, they have always visited and seen the mom and dad. I am concerned about not doing this. Has anyone delt w/ a breeder that was pretty far from them? How did you do this? Did you make the trip anyway to see the mom and dad?

Honestly I'd make the trip anyway to ensure that the breeder treats the dogs well and to make sure it is not a BYB or PM. Plus with the price of gas it might even be better to take a train or fly there & travel home with your pup.

Re: ? about breeders that are far away
I got one of my dogs from a breeder that was too far away to visit, and received our puppy sight unseen. The breeders had a website, and we were able to see photos of the puppies, their parents, their living conditions, etc. I won't say I'd recommend doing that, because I now know better and realize we could have looked further into it... but it worked out very well for us.
If the breeder is within driving distance, I would go there to see the parents anyway if it's important to you. It might be fun to make it a weekend trip and stay overnight somewhere nearby to break up all the driving.

We didn't but our Breeder came HIGHLY recommended. Had I found the breeder off the internet, then I would of wanted to have met the pups in person. How did your hear about the breeder?

If you have the opportunity to go and see where the dogs are from, I would take it. It's a nice gesture of the breeder to meet you half way, but I would want to see where the pup came from and how the breeder treats their dogs/pups.

We did but the breeder came recommended through AKC and the mom was a champion. The breeder had a local do a house visit and called references and our vet so I felt good about it.

Re: ? about breeders that are far away
I got both my cats from breeders that were far away. I just researched them by talking to them, asking them questions, reading their website and seeing pictures of their ‘set up’ and checked their references of prior owners and called the vet they use. I refuse to ship a pet of mine so I flew to the breeder to get my cats and met the breeder and saw the facility then.
