Bank of America
To the posters who are contemplating getting a Bank of America credit card, I urge you not to!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I got a message from them in July, telling me that I owed them money (I did not) and that they wanted to settle before going to a debt collector. I called them, asked them to look at my zero balance account, they verified it, apologized and said its all cleared up.
well last week, i get another threatening message, saying they've been trying to reach me since this summer blah blah....so I call them back. They tell me I owe 27K!!! I give them my cc number and tell them to double check that, b/c I owe $200, not 27K. So they look at it and they're like, we need to verify this. Fine. So they ask what state I live in. I say NY, they say that the Robyn who owes this $$ lives in Ohio. (duh, it's not me.) Then they ask my mom's maiden name, I give it, and they tell me that my answer doesn't match the person who owes the money. then they ask for my social, i get the same answer. Finally they're like, well what's your work number? so I give it and they tell me that my work number matches up w/the person who owes the $$$. So after fighting with them, talking to a supervisor and reminding them that NOTHING matched up but the phone number and maybe - just maybe - they attached my # to the person w/the same name in Ohio, they were like 'oh, sorry.' Then I asked for a confirmation that this was settled and it is not my debt and they tell me they cannot do that. Argh!!!!
I will be closing this card after my $200 bill comes. Stay away!!!

Re: Bank of America
are you sure it was BOA calling you? You gave them a lot of information, I would be worried it was someone trying to scam you.

Mine too!
I would suggest IMMEDIATELY calling BoA to tell them about this phone call, and try to get confirmation that it was them calling ...
Also, maybe put some sort of a fraud watch on your account? And your credit reports too ... I think there's a free 30 day trial with bankrate.com
You may have some sort of identity theft attempt going on here ...

Re: Bank of America
If it was a debt collector I would never give out info over the phone. If they say it's your debt they should have all that info. I would send them a certified letter return receipt asking them to prove that it is your debt and to send you the statements claiming it is yours. Also I would check your credit report to make sure nothing negative was posted on there. It may not be BOA.

Re: Bank of America
unless you have caller id and it said boa on it, don't give out infomation over the phone unless you are expecting a callback..
If its really important, you can always call the number on the back of your card to contact pretty much any deptartment that may of been trying to reach you...
i would report your card lost ASAP...
You gave out way to much info and like others have said, its a good chance its a scam...
To add, i never had a problem with my 2 BOA accounts..nobody is perfect...

You say the call was on your VM ... does that mean you returned a phone call to whatever # they left?
I would still call the # on the back of your card to verify that they were actually trying to reach you, etc.
It sounds fishy to me ... and even if you only gave them the last four of your social, you still gave them a lot of other information (all the kind of info that identity thieves could use to fill out applications for other credit cards, etc. They may have already had your social, and you just confirmed it for them ... they are very sneaky & good at what they do!

you just said you gave them your cc number.. your address... your mother's maiden name... your work number and that you live in NY...
I think its someone trying to scam you. thats how they do it. they pretend to be your CC company etc etc.
i would all BOA IMMEDIATELY.. (the phone # on your card) and cancel your account

I agree with the others, it sounds like a scam! Call BOA and tell them what happened! I would also put a fraud alert on your credit report!
I have a BOA cc and have never had any problems.

I would still call BoA - you lose what, like fifteen minutes by calling the number on your card?
It's 15 minutes you won't regret...

Re: Bank of America
Whenever I've talked to BofA, they've only asked for my security question. I couldn't remember the answer to it(duh- I know), so they asked for my mother's maiden name- not all that other info.
ETA: I've been with BofA for almost 10 years and have never had a problem with them.
