Quite Annoyed
My RE suggested that prior to my retreival DH produce a sample they can freeze. He suggested this because he said he's seen quite a few times in his years men not being able to produce the day of a retreival, because it's too much pressure. So he always suggests to his couples to have a frozen sample just in case.
Anyway, DH goes this morning and the lab tells him that they still have a frozen sample from our last IUI cycle, and DH was and asked why. Apparently, it's their policy to split the sample into two so they have one for the 1st IUI day and one for the 2nd IUI day. The reason we had DH give a sample last time was because he was away on business the day of my 2nd IUI, but was able to have a fresh sample for the 1st day because he was with me that morning. I was surprised that morning how low the count was, but never questioned it. Now we know why..because they split it.
Nobody told us about this "policy" and we're both extremley annoyed because we feel due to the low count of the 2nd IUI, it significantly decreased our chances to conceive on our last IUI cycle before moving to IVF. I want to complain about this to somebody, but at the same time it's definately a moot point since I'm in the midst of an IVF cycle and can't change what happened 2 months ago.
So now, we will end up with 3 frozen samples because they will also split today's sample and we more than likely will not even use them. It doesn't really matter because we're doing ICSI, so count is not a factor anymore.
Not really looking for advice, but just needed to vent.

Wow, I didn't know they do this. We're due to start IUI this month; I will have to ask about this. Sounds to me like this lowers your chances.

You have every right to be annoyed- I would be too- Sometimes it seems like Dr.s feel like they don't have to give patients the details and have the "leave it to the professionals" attitude which is so wrong...Hope you get your BFP and can put that behind you

I have never heard of that. They definitely didn't do that with us. During our iui's I actually watched the lab tech prepare the sample. I would be p*ssed off also. I don't understand how they can do something without telling you.

They didn't do this w/ our IUI either- we waited, picked up our sample from the lab and brought it down the road to the drs office- and they used the entire sample. I would def. say something anway- even thought they can't change it.

I think they split it BEFORE they give it to you in the tube

??? I know they spun it out and whatever- but they never split it into more than 1- we only did 1 IUI and they used the entire sample once we got it from the lab- it was never frozen.

Why would they split this one?
That's what DH asked them, and they said it's the process. I don't know, it just seems so strange to me, that we weren't told of this process.
MrsMessina - My RE does back to back IUI's and our last cycle, my husband was out of town on business, which we knew was going to happen, so he went to the RE's a few days before the IUI to give them a sample to freeze. On a fresh IUI, they don't split it after they do the wash. In this instance they did.
I'm beginning to think my husband didn't pay full attention to what the lab tech told him today (shocker ) and that they may have thought he would be out of town for BOTH IUI's therefore split the sample so they can do the back to back. The more I think about it, the more I think this was the case.

I understood what you meant--- that's why I was surprised that they'd freeze part of it, knowing that your DH was going out of town and you'd only end up doing 1IUI that month (like we did).

We did do 2 IUI's he was out of town for the 2nd one. The first one was a fresh sample that wasn't split. The sample he gave a few days prior for the 2nd one is the sample they split.

what Im saying is you have no way of knowing , like she didnt if they split it.
they split it after they spin it and they could have given you half the sample in a test tube and froze the other half.
Thats what it soudns likehappen to the poster.

Oh, i understood what you meant. I know in our case, the andrologist told us we had the entire sample and that it wasn't split- she was actually more thorough than my DH would've liked her to be, telling us about the entire process, #'s and every possible thing about the sample. DH was actually really uncomfortable w/ the whole thing and actually stayed out of the room b/c he didn't want to know (due to his beliefs--- he wasn't exactly all for having to go that route, but did it anyway)--she actually came out and got him and brought him back into the lab... The andrologist is actually my dr's senior partner's wife- she even went as far as to have the senior partner (her DH) come in to view the sample b/c we thought there was lint in it and neither one of them saw anything so she said it must've left w/ the 1st wash. The senior dr. actually spoke to us about it afterwards... and my dr told us they didn't feel the need to freeze any samples, etc... since we'd only be doing 1 IUI that month-- because I asked him about it before we even considered doing an IUI, mainly because our insurance was going to run out and I didn't know how much it cost. I thought I saw that the OP mentioned that she knew that her DH would be out of town so they would only be doing the 2nd IUI w/o him b/c he was available on the first day--- which is why I was surprised that the drs ofice would break it in half to freeze, knowing that.

Re: Quite Annoyed
Just wanted to let you know that splitting the sample wouldn't affect the count. The count is the number of sperm per milliliter...so just because they split the sample doesn't mean the count is lower...it just means they split the sample. If there was a very low volume of semen, then splitting might make a difference. But, if he had a normal volume then the split wouldn't have negatively affected your chances too much.
