Which do you think is cheaper?
For St. Patty's Day:
1. going out for drinks/food at a bar or pub 2. having something at our apt where we buy a heinekin mini keg and a six pack, chips, maybe pizza etc.

I would imagine that a pot luck at home would be cheaper.

Re: Which do you think is cheaper?
totally Option 2
not just cheaper--but frankly better. cause if you have people over--chances are they will bring some alcohol themselves and its much better to hang out with just your friends and drink at home than a bar with loud drunken people!

Re: Which do you think is cheaper?
for me - it's a toss up in terms of $$.
depends on whether the place you'd be goind is running good specials for st.patrick's day, which quite a few do.
also depends on how much you would spend on food and drinks. dh and i have opted to have people over in the past bc we thought it would be cheaper, and then we have definitely have spent more $$ on food and alcohol hosting than if we had just been paying for the two of us out.
i think if you set it up as a potluck - like a previous poster mentioned - or can ask other ppl coming to bring alcohol, you could make it cheaper than going out.
Either option sounds like you two will have fun though!

Oh, I brew my own beer (don't have any ready right now). I'm a total beer snob. But $$$ is also tight, so I gotta get something on the cheap side. And I don't think we could finish a 1/2 or 1/4 keg because we were just going to have a few people over.

Beth, why don't you cook instead?
make a corned beef, some cabbage, boiled potatoes.
pick up a soda bread. some Irish cheddar maybe.
let your's guests each contribute a 6 pack.
you'll have plenty of beer and variety. and you'll stay true to the Irish theme.
food network is your friend
the great part is, St' Patty's day falls on a Monday this year. you can make some of this ahead of time so you're not slaving away on Monday!
I personally LOVE LOVE LOVE colcannon!
ETA: If you like, fm me with your budget and I'll see if I can help you figure out how to get the most bang...I LIVE for this stuff.

Ok, totally missing the point. Heineken is not the beer of choice on St. Patty's Day. Hello, go with an irish stout or ale girl. Its no more expensive than Heineken. Why get a keg anyway? Do bottles & cans.

You're probably right. I guess a couple of 12 packs is the same price or less than a mini keg.
