I'm hoping a day or two... but I doubt that. I think the strike just pisssed off the MTA even more.

I'm hoping it's over before Christmas Eve. My brother is NYPD and is supposed to be off this weekend. Now he's on 12 hour tours, no days off until it ends.

I'm hoping it's over by next week at this time. Usually when a strike happens, both sides are so disgusted with one another that they won't even bother to negotiate for a few days. then christmas... hopefully by next Tuesday? I think if it stretches into next week Pataki will have no choice but to get involved.

Re: so how long does everyone say this strike will last ?

I think it might one be a day or two since the upper level of the union wants to takeover and seek labor dispute.

Exclusive: Transit Union Split Over Strike
Upper level may seek to takeover and settle labor dispute

The international arm of the Transport Workers Union is stunned and angry that its Local 100, representing New York subway and bus workers, turned down a contract offer from management and ordered its members to walk off their jobs, CBS2 News has learned.

Sources within other large public employee unions tell CBS2 reporter Marcia Kramer that the TWU's international leadership is considering taking over the local and seeking a settlement with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.
Those sources say the upper level of the TWU thinks the MTA's latest offer is fair and worthy of further consideration and negotiation. They stand against a militant faction within Local 100 that pressed hard for a strike.

Here's a look at the key issues in the transit talks:

PENSIONS: The Metropolitan Transportation Authority had originally wanted to raise the age at which new employees become eligible for full a pension from 55 to 62. The union balked at that proposal. The MTA later agreed to allow pension eligibility to remain at 55 for new employees, but asked that the new workers contribute 6 percent of their salaries for their first 10 years of employment.

WAGES: The MTA had proposed annual raises of 3 percent. The union wanted higher pay increases; a later MTA offer included annual raises of 3 percent, 4 percent and 3.5 percent.

HEALTH: The MTA wants new employees to contribute 1 percent of their salary to pay for health insurance. Transit workers currently do not have to pay anything for health insurance.

SECURITY: The union wants disaster-preparedness training for its work force, following transit system bombings in Madrid and London.

HOLIDAYS: The latest MTA proposal also included added the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

DISCIPLINE: The TWU would like to eleiminate several rules and penalties that go with them. The union considers these rule and penalties "draconian."

I wish Pataki would pull a Ronald Regan and just fire them all like Regan did when the air traffic controllers went on strike.

That proposal was more than fair.

I don't think Pataki has the authority to do that. If he fired everyone, it would probably take a long time to find replacement workers and train them. This would affect commuters a lot more than a strike.

That 6% pension contribution is probably a sticking point. I think that is high compared to what other contracts require employees to contribute.

My husband is NYPD and he too just got called in for 12 hours shifts. I'm really hoping this doesn't effect Christmas because my daughter now knows what Christmas is about and I would hate for him to miss it. We also have a ton of things to put together for her and I need him around.

Hence the term wish Chat Icon

I believe each day the workers strike, they get fiined (personally, yes?)

I think 6% contribution for 10 years on a pension is fair. After all they should be lucky & thankful to have a pension at all- many government pensions are underfunded and will cause governments to go bankrupt themselves. If that happens, no pension for anyone.
