Pet Plates

Okay - everyone on this board is an animal lover and everyone here believes that their pet is a companion and a family member. BUT... how do you feel about dogs eating off the same plates that you eat from?

My girlfriend has a very cute and VERY SPOILED little dog. This dog IS her child. And when she feeds her pup she pulls any plate from the cabinet and puts the food on it and puts it on the floor. I never really thought too much about it until another friend mentioned that she would never eat anything over there because she wouldn't eat off of a dog's dish.

I mean - the plates are washed and all but... Thunder has his own bowls - 3 sets of them. They get washed and cleaned after each meal - but I don't eat out of his bowls and he doesn't eat off of my plates.

What do you think?

ETA: I have eaten at her house... I mean - I eat at restaurants off of plates that God knows WHO has eaten off of before.. at least I know Nitzche! Chat Icon

Re: Pet Plates

I am not a fan of this for a variety of reasons. The cleanliness of it is one thing, but it also is an action that kind of dilutes the line between master/alpha and pet. The dog, by eating off of your plate, feels a boost within the pack. It can lead to other behavioural issues. JMHO.

Not to mention that dogs should not eat off of regular porcelain plates. If there is a chip or a crack in the coating, food bacteria can multiply and make the dog sick.

I don't think it's a good idea. Katie gets excited when she hears me picking up my bowls or opening the food cabinet, she knows that it is HER feeding time. I don't want her to think everytime I eat she can. We feed her 2x a day.

Re: Pet Plates

Arnold has his own bowls, I don't eat out of his and he doesn't eat out of ours.

I don't think I'd be grossed out to eat at their house, I assume they clean the plates thoroughly but I just don't think it's necessary.

Re: Pet Plates

it's not a good idea because the dog shouldnt be eating scraps of human food. however it also depends on the type of plates. most books and vets don't recommend dogs eating out of ceramic bowls because if they chip, it could harm them as well as the paint on them. i kiss my dog on the mouth, those germs dont bother me (as long as he didnt just lick his butt haha)

I'm pretty sure the OP meant that the dog eats dog food off of the family's regular "human" dishes -- not that he was sharing the same plate of food as his owner...

That makes a lot of sense about the ceramic bowls. I never used them b/c I was always afraid of the big dogs breaking them... but that's good to know. I hadn't thought of them chipping.

There are actually warnings on the pet ceramic bowls as well. You have to be very careful and super-vigilant about making sure they are not chipped. I let my smallest ones use them, so they cannot do any harm. My bigger guys get the metal bowls.

Re: Pet Plates

if I'm eating some soup and there's a little leftover, I will put the bowl down and let K.C. slurp it up.

Most of the time I will put something on a paper plate and give it to him.

These dishes are all washed in the dishwasher.

Nope, Piper has his own plates. I also make it a point to wash his dish separately from ours. When I had Cats, they too had their own plates.

Re: Pet Plates

I would let the dog eat off our plates, but DH HATES it...so we don't do it.
My theory is that they go in the dishwasher anyway, but he is totally grossed out by the idea so I go with him on this one.
