When it rains it pours! Daycare related
I have had on a waitlist since October 2007 for a spot in my #1 daycare center pick in September 2008. I have called consistently to make clear I wanted a spot (every couple of weeks since after the New Year).
Anyway, come earlier this week, the director confirms we got our spot. I was SO excited (like my kid got into Harvard or something). DH & I went this morning to leave our deposit and so I could show DH the place. We felt great about it - the teachers were super friendly, the place clean & the children all seemed happy.
I just got an e-mail from my aunt who lives 2 towns over (less convenient, but still close) saying she's considering doing in home daycare and would we be interested. How odd! Last week I had no clue what we'd do about daycare and this week - all in one day - we have 2 great choices.
So, the point is WWYD? I know most would just at a family member watching baby, but again, I am very excited about this place.
Part of me thinks I should bring DC to my aunt until age 1 (as of now baby will start ca. 5 1/2 months).
Any thoughts? WWYD?

Well, I think you need to first consider if she is def doing it or considering it! How much is the deposit that you have to leave...is it a lot? Do you have to keep baby is for a certain amount of time, or is it pay as you go. I would sign baby up for day care and lose the money if I were you! I wouldn't want to lose the spot!!!

Re: When it rains it pours! Daycare related
We already signed the baby up this morning (before I knew about my aunt) and the deposit was minimal ($50) so I have no problems losing that. I would keep the baby on the daycare list pretty much up until the summer just to be sure of my decision and to be sure nothing changes with my aunt.
My biggest question to other mommies to be is just what scenario would be more beneficial for .

I would find out how many other children she expects to be watching...if she is watching 3 other children, that gives less attention to your newborn.

To be honest...I keep thinking in my head...well, it depends on the Aunt! HAHA! I guess you have to look at your Aunts credentials and how she will run things!!!

This is def. a family member I trust. If she decides to do such a thing, there's no way she'd leave me hanging. But, again, if it's something she's just tossing around now, I don't want her to feel committed to me. Plus, being that I'm not needing this for another 6 + months and plan to keep the baby on the other list - I don't feel like I'm giving anything up.

Right, at this point I don't think she knows. However, the daycare rule is 4:1 I believe. Baby will be over 5 months no matter where we start him/her - so not quite a newborn.

I personally would want with family. But as Janine said, I would see how many kids she plans on taking.

My only concern is if you go with your aunt and then she decides that she doesn't want to do in home care anymore, would you still be able to get a spot at the day care?

I would stick with the daycare for now. If your aunts ideas ever become definite then you can reconsider!

Re: When it rains it pours! Daycare related
I say the day care center. It can get complicated when family members watch your children. You might be less inclined to make comments or suggestions. Also, day care is always open and there are always people to cover when someone is sick. If this is truly as great of an environment as you say and financially you have no issues with the cost - I say go with the center. If it's not working, you can always pull DC and use the Aunt. You can't do the reverse. IMO

Re: When it rains it pours! Daycare related
I would definitely go for a family member, I'm not a daycare center fan. Especially for a newborn, if your aunt can give more individualized attention it may be better. Not sure if that's the exact situation. I'm personally trying to avoid the daycare route.

Re: When it rains it pours! Daycare related
I would stick with the original plan of the daycare. See how she progresses with her plan. She is not set up yet, she may change her mind.
I personally would be interested in knowing how old the other kids will be. I did not do a home daycare for DS for this reason. I did not want a 3, 7, 11 year old with DS. Especially after the news on TV about "accidents" in home daycare with other children and babies.
