Has anyone had ISCI for reasons other than semen related ???
As some of you may have read in my previous post, we just did an IVF trans. and had a problem with fertilization for unknown reasons..Out of 13 eggs only 2 poor quality embies made it to a 3 day transfer....My RE called today to see how I was as she knew I was very upset (which I thought was very caring of her)..She had said that she would recommend ISCI for our next cycle..I was under the impression that ISCI was mainly used for semen related issues which we definately don't have , but if she thinks that will help- Im all for it..So my question is this...
If you had ISCI done- what was the reason ?
And did you have better results from it than without ?
I have my 1st beta sched. for 3/1 and have already set up a consult to discuss a plan of action for the next cycle if this doesnt take...Thanks !

We did ISCI for both cycles. My Re told me it gave the best odds for fertilization. Both times we had 90% of the eggs fertilize. My RE also doesn't beleive in making a lot of eggs. He believes that a few really good are better then a lot of immature ones. So each cycle I had 8 eggs .

Re: Has anyone had ISCI for reasons other than semen related ???
We're prime candidates for ICSI because of DH's semen issues. However, the doctor told us that with ICSI, the chances of the egg fertilizing are really high.
Taken from http://www.ucsfivf.org/ucsf-icsi.htm:
Intracytoplasmic sperm injection, or ICSI, is a micromanipulation technique developed to help achieve fertilization for couples with severe male factor infertility or couples who have had failure to fertilize in a previous in vitro fertilization attempt. The procedure overcomes many of the barriers to fertilization and allows couples with little hope of achieving successful pregnancy to obtain fertilized embryos.
Patients are electing to undergo ICSI for reasons other than male factor infertility. Those reasons include previous poor fertilization with IVF, decreased number of eggs for fertilization, variable sperm counts, and unexplained infertility. Thus, many patients choose to undergo the ICSI procedure in order to maximize their success even when the procedure may not be clearly indicated.

Thank you so much- thats exactly the information I was looking for ! I just kinda wished it was done with this cycle but I just have to look ahead to the future ...

So glad I could help. At least now you're informed and if you have a next cycle, you can have it done then.

My friend had it done because her egg walls were "thick".
I'm sure there's a scientific term for it.
Basically her DH's count was fine, but they had trouble burrowing in there so the ICSI was able to help them concieve.

Re: Has anyone had ISCI for reasons other than semen related ???
my RE reccommends icsi and natural fertilization. we don't have undiagnosed infertility, no sperm issues and we did icsi with our transfer. The lab will watch the egg and sperm to see if it is going to fertilize, if they don't think it will, they will do icsi on the egg. i currently have on naturally fertilized embryo and one icsi embryo inside of me

Thas one of the things I was wondering- why ISCI wasnt done after they saw the fertilization was not happening on its own (we signed for it and everything)
...Good luck to you !
