My brother graduated from Johnson & Wales in Providence, RI and a family friend's daughter is attending the Culinary Institute in Hyde Park, NY.

By chance, do you know how she likes New Hyde Park? She is coming home from Maryland and wants to stay in NY!

Thanks for the responses!

Re: Anyone attend Culinary School?

Hyde Park is in upstate NY

I was thisclose to attending the French Culinary Institute.

bottom line, culinary school is expensive. good paying chef jobs are hard to find. I couldn't lay the expense of school (tuition PLUS no income on my part while in school) on dh's doorstep.

If I was younger and singler, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

It's Hyde Park, near Poughkeepsie...About 3 hours upstate from here. My father lives right near there.

I think the Culinary Institute of America is ranked the best in the US, but it is very difficult to get into, and pricey. I knew several people who went there, but I'd make sure it's really what she wants to do before giving the time and money to go there.

There are some community college programs in culinary arts...Those might be a cheaper way to experiment and see if it's what she really wants to do. I know the eastern campus of SCCC has a program that is pretty strong.

I went to a university with a hotel and restaurant management program...If she is interested in restaurants, this is also another option...

She should really shadow a chef or do an internship. I had two friends who were chefs who gave it up since it meant working every holiday, weekend, night, etc. From what I have heard, it is not a very family-friendly profession.

I took a baking and pastry class over the winter. At the Culinary Academy of Long Island. It's in Plainview.

Re: Anyone attend Culinary School?

A family member of mine also went to Johnson & Wales. He did a 2 year program in Culinary Arts and then stayed another 2 to get a bachelor's degree. Many of the students just do the 2 year degree and then go work.

Re: Anyone attend Culinary School?

NYIT is a good school for culinary and affordable. I went to NYIT for hospitality management. I wanted to go for culinary but it was more money and I wasn't that crazy about the hours of a culinary job and the money. I made better money as a waitress (I didn't have a set of rules and did my job and got good tips- had to keep the theme going Chat Icon ). Sometimes I regret it but there is no way I would be sane if I were still in that industry (it didn't work for me).
