My secretary is late... again

This is the second day in a row that she has been an hour late! I hate to be a biotch, but she has been late almost every day this week. A few minutes is one thing- but an hour! And she is leaving early this afternoon.

ETA: My boss has even asked me if she has a problem with time because sometimes he calls at 9 am when I am out in the AM adn she's not here. I cover for her- because overall she is a good sercretary.

I want to address this with her, but I'm not sure the best way.

there wasn't a strike all week... and this has happened before, at least once a week she is 30-45 minutes late.

you have to tell her that she has to be on time and that clients and other people have noticed. Unfortunately, you have to be firm with her. Unexusable lateness is unexusableChat Icon Chat Icon

The only thing you can do is address the problem with her....don't put it off or the behavior will continue

Shelly, I would maybe shoot her an e-mail and tell her that you appreciate all she does, but her tardiness is worrying you. Maybe she does have "issues" going on right now. Chat Icon

She calls when she gets out of the subway... a few blocks away. She doesn't call before she gets on the train.

ETA: I understand with commuting- 15 minutes late. Especially now that I am coming from LI, I knwo the train can be late and then waiting for a subway. But more than that means you are not leaving on time.

There are only 2 of us in the office, it woudl be more awkward if I sent her an e-mail. I should just talk to her.

Hmmm thats not right. If I am going to be late I call my boss as soon as possible.

I would talk to her - if you dont she probably thinks that you dont mind her lateness.

Re: My secretary is late... again

an hour late?? something must be going on. you have to speak to her about it, otherwise she'll think that its not a problem and continue to come in late

Oh, yeah that would be. I thought it was a big office. I would def. meet with her. You can't just let it slide.

I just spoke to her... we get along very well. I asked if everythign was OK and she said it was the trains. I told her that our boss was asking about her tardiness and that she should try to make more efforts to be on time. I kept it casual. Hopefully things will get better.

Re: My secretary is late... again

Do you have a HR person to deal with this stuff so you dont have to do it directly?

Otherwise just call her in your office, shut the door and tell her its becoming a problem...needs to stop...etc

Re: My secretary is late... again

I already spoke to her. We don't really have an HR person, and in the NY office- its just the two of us. She has never even met the person who would be the "HR" person because she is in the Hartford office.

I said something casually and mentioned that our boss asked me about her coming in late and asked her to try to be on time. I let it go and a few minutes later we started talking about the Howard Stern madness outside, to make sure there was no awkwardness.

I actually got in to work in record time today. The traffic today was totally non-existant.

I wish every day would be like today.
