HD box for standard tvs?

I overheard a co-worker mentioning something about how soon, anyone who owns a standard tv (non-HD compatible) will need a specific box to transmit the appropriate signal to standard tvs because the signals are being changed to HD-ready. Is this true? Anyone know about this?

No.

TVs will no longer be able to carry analog signals without a converter.

It only affects you if you are using an antenna. if you have cable or satellite it has no impact.

And I don't think it has anything to do with HD.

February 2009 all tv has to be digital.
I am pretty sure you need a HDTV or HD ready tv to see digital television, I may be mistaken but I am pretty sure this is correct.

Nope. You can have digital without HD.

I have digital cable right now, not HD.

ETA: I think the confusion might be that Digital TV is refered to as DTV

This site should help

Nope.

This only affects people using TVs with antennas. If you have cable, you won't need a converter.

Re: HD box for standard tvs?

We have an HD receiver, but a SDTV. The TV isn't the major factor. Whatever is the first thing to receive the signal is what matters. If you have cable or antennae going directly into the TV, then you need a digital TV. If your signal goes into a converter (cable, satellite, FiOS) first, then it doesn't matter what kind of TV you have.
