Border Collies...

Does anyone have a border collie? I have a 3 yr old who seems to be getting more and more out of control by the day... he is acting up like a 3 yr old child lately and he is driving me crazy!!!

Re: Border Collies...

No but my neighbors have one - and he barks at every single squirrel that goes by, morning, noon and night.

I think they are lovely but, the barking and the potential npping would get to me. They are bred to herd....

Re: Border Collies...

They are good dogs but they can be very hyper. They need a lot of excercising and a big yard to run That is just their breed.

Agreed. My sister had one, highly intelligent, but not exercised enough. She just thought letting him outside was enough. (it wasn't) He became destructive from his mistreatment.

He was SUCH a good dog. I would have taken him if I could, and given him what he needed.

I'd suggest walking him twice a day at least, and seeing how that changes things.

I've never owned one myself, but have had several friends with them. They need a LOT of exercise -- daily walks or just being let out in the yard is usually not enough. They are true working dogs and need plenty of exercise for their body and mind -- or they get bored and destructive.

Re: Border Collies...

I responded to your FM but I will respond here as well. We have a Border Collie. She is about 1 1/2 years old. She is a fantastic dog, very loving, loyal and smart. That being said Border Collies are not for everyone. It takes a lot of consistency. Since they are so smart, if you are not consistent in your training and exercise routine they tend to get destructive.

We make sure she gets discipline, exercise and mental stimulation everyday. Exercise is good but they really need to play games that keep them occupied and mentally stimulated. We teach her tricks and do a little obedience training in the backyard.

I am nervous that she will start to act up when the baby gets here b/c we will have a lot less time for her. Luckily my sister and parents are very close and able to help out.

Re: Border Collies...

I have a border collie....and let me tell you thrugh the years I have been through ALOT with him. But, I LOVE him! He is the best. So smart. Love him! They DO need tons of exercise...and be super careful. My dog used to dig under my mom's fence when I lived at home and got out many many times. I have paid so many fines and bailed him out of doggie jail (the pound) before.

But he is older now, gonna be 11 in April. I LOVE him...did I mention that?

You sound like the perfect Border Collie owner. Chat Icon It's my wish that my sister's old dog was placed with a home like yours.

I haven't done research yet, but I saw on the Dog Whisperer that he had a vest for a dog that held something weighted on each side. He'd use two identical bottles of water.

He said that when it's on, they sense they have a task, and it changes their disposition. It did on the dog he was working with, that much was obvious. I was wondering if that would help with working dogs, to kind of stimulate their instincts that they know they have a job to do when that vest goes on. Much like service dogs.

Thanks! Chat Icon We try, I can't take all the credit DH is the main influence. He loves dogs and is really good with them. When we lived in our coop in Queens our neighbors called him the local Cesar Milan. Chat Icon

We have one of the backpacks you mentioned and it does help to her feel she has a job to do. It also tires her out a bit when running around the backyard.
