Did anyone file a police report? That would be the appropriate first place to start. It's not okay for someone to hit a dog and then drive away.

While I appreciate the need to get this awful story out online, I just hope the appropriate measures are being taken offline as well. We don't need tons of people chasing down anyone whose car might match that description.

Im glad you did this...people like this should be punished! My first Boxer was hit by a car while my husband was taking her out of the car...she was on a retractable leash and jumped out too far from the car...a car came flying down our block (mind you its a tiny block) hit our dog and kept on driving! We had to put her down since she had a fractured pelvic bone and would most likely need more than one surgery and intensive rehab...and the vet did not guarantee that she would ever walk again. So she even advised to put her down...we never found out who did it, but we are pretty sure its the alkie down the block who drives a very similar car that DH remembers looked like the one that hit our Jadie...and he flies down our block.

Anyway...sorry for rambling but we were devastated when we lost her and I know exaclty what this family is going through and I hope they find this BA$TARD!

Thanks everyone I thought it was the right thing to do. I also got in touch with brookhaven town shelter to see what my next move would be. But unfortunally I do not have any information on the family of the dog who was hit. It happened so fast that I didn't even think to get there name or number. I'm thinking about maybe posting a sign up were it happened with my number for them to call me. I know the shelter said they could do more if I had more family information. I also did it because I know if this happened to me I would want someone to do the samething!! Thanks again everyone this was a horrible experience I never want to be in it again but I also want justice for that dog.

It's really too bad you couldn't get the pet owner's name or number, but I could understand them not wanting to hang around the scene of the accident.

We did call police and there were sending someone out. At that point I also flagged down a sheriff who happened to pass by. We got out and we told him we just got off the phone with the police. At that point the family had already left. The father wanted to take the boys away from the scene so I never got there name or number
