Re: I just don't get it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've known many women who were in this situation. Sure, they know how to do it and they know they are able to do it, but the bottom line is that they just don't want to do it. (At least that's what I've heard from the people I know of.)

ETS: Some people actually like smoking.

Because maybe it's a habit and even though they say they want to quit, subconciously they actually enjoy it.

Why is that female smokers can immediately stop smoking when they find out their pregnant but yet after they have the baby they start smoking again. I don't understand why women say it's a hard habit to kick when I believe they know how to kick it. Anyone feel the same way?

well maybe they aren't true smokers ??? I don't know but I can't kick the habit .....I know people who can't kick it even when there preggo .... but I will tell you it is hard

I have a lot of respect for the women who quit for their babies. What bothers me most is the women who continue to smoke throughout their pregnancy. I do find it a bit odd though that the women that do quit are able to not smoke for 9 months for the sake of their baby and then immediately start again afterwards despite the fact that second-hand smoke is just as bad for them. I agree, I smoke and yes I would love to quit, but I just can't do it right now! Even though I want to stop, I enjoy it too much. I know all the risks and how bad it is, but it is an addiction and a very hard habit to break! When I do become pregnant, I would of course stop, and i hope that after not smoking for those 9 months I would Never go back.

Re: I just don't get it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know a lot of ladies that crave it for 9 months and cannot wait to take a puff as soon as they give birth! You have to be READY to quit ... having a baby and quitting for 9 months for the health of the baby is different than CHOOSING to quit for good.

Its a lot easier to quit smoking when you have motivation like being pregnant and not wanting to hurt your baby.

After the baby is born, there isnt as much motivation and smoking is a very hard habit to break. Even having 1 or 2 can lead you right back to full blown smoking.

Because some people really don't want to quit....I am one of those former smokers that loved it and despite the fact that I stopped 2 and a half years ago, I still miss & crave cigarettes a lot. Quitting was one of the more difficult things I have done for myself because they are so bad for you (blah blah blah - everyone knows that), which is the ONLY reason I won't have just ONE cigarette because I would start up again immediately.

Re: I just don't get it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Obviously you've never smoked.

When a woman gets pregnant, they quit because they have absolutely no other choice but to do so for the 9 months. After that 9 mos, most will try to continue quitting. But if they didn't do it because they WANTED to do it the first time, chances are they'll fall back into the habit. My SIL has 3 kids... and went thru this each time and still smokes today.

It's the same as an alcoholic or a drug addict. You *think* you'll be ok to have just 1 or 2... and the whole cycle starts up again. It's an addiction, plain and simple.

Many women I know say they want to stop but they can't, but when they are pregnant can. I guess it's just mentally putting your mind to it.

Has nothing to do with that there are multiple facets

Its a lot easier to quit smoking when you have motivation like being pregnant and not wanting to hurt your baby.

After the baby is born, there isnt as much motivation and smoking is a very hard habit to break. Even having 1 or 2 can lead you right back to full blown smoking.

I've never smoked and neither have the desire to start. I really commend those who quit. My father smoked since he was like 15 and stopped about 5 years ago. I bought him the patches (Nicoderm CQ that goes by stages) and told him he can use it if he'd like. I also told him I'd like to increase the chances to have him around even more. He used the first two stages and didn't even finish the third one. He said you definitely need the desire to quit. Now when someone smokes next to him, he can't stand it and tell them it stinks....I find that so amusing considering he was a smoker.

You mentioned that they have the motivation to stop smoking for the baby...which is really great....
You said that after the baby is born, there's isn't much motivation...I think, in my opinion, that's where the motivation should be really high. Not only will this person be a mother, and you definitely want to be there for your child but also, for their own health. You definitely want to make sure that you will be there for your child in the years to come....by smoking, the chances of doing that are less and less.
