our heater is broken and we have TERRIBLE windows. Now, we pay our own heat. does that mean that WE haev to get it fixed or does the landlord????
I would think the landlord would be responsible for that. When we rented, we did nothing.

Re: Heating Question
I would imagine that the building is heated off one system, but even if it's something in your apartment the super should be responsible for fixing it.

Re: Heating Question
When my refrigerator broke in the apt I was renting I called my landlord and he got a new one. So I would call your landlord and tell him he has to fix it. If he does not do so in a timely manner you can call your local housing authority to file a complaint.

Re: Heating Question
The landlord has to fix it, when anything like that goes wrong in our houses it's not the tenants responsiblities, we take care of it, unless of course they broke it.

Re: Heating Question
we dont have a super and we adjust our own heat. its a REALLLLY old system th at is actually illegal to put in apts nowadays.
i just wasnt sure if its our repsonsiblities or the landlords. since we pay our own heat. but i would think it should be hers, i mena if we need a new one, we shouldnt have to buy one right>?

Re: Heating Question
No you shouldn't be responsible... is there anything in your lease about it? it says in the leases we have with our tenants, "the leasee has to keep things in good order and repair and repair anything that have resulted from their "misuse", major repairs due to other reasons is our responsibility..."

Re: Heating Question
I would say the landlord too. It would be illegal for him to rent without heat - even if you pay for it.

Re: Heating Question
It's definitely the landlords responsibility. Our heat went a couple of weeks ago and we have a tenant. We were going to call a heating guy, but Dh was able to fix it himself. Our tenant is a friend so it wasn't that big of a deal, but either way, it was our problem to take care of.

Re: Heating Question
If the problem is with the radiator itself, its the LL's job to fix it, unless your lease says different. I assume you pay an outside company to provide heat. If the problem is with the outside company, then the LL would not be responsible since the problem is not with the heating unit itself, but with the heat provider.

Re: Heating Question
Jess, you should call the landlord asap. they need to fix it by law or if not report their azz. Call 311. Can you buy an electric heater in the meantime? Sorry you have to go through this.
