So listen to what my neighbor tells DH last night...
My neighbors wife had to get some type of test during her pregnancy where she had to get a needle poked into her tummy to draw out & test the amniotic fluid.
Can somepne please explain why someone would need such a test & is this a test that is required for everyone?
I was flipping just at the thought of this.

Its called an amnio, and they are used if there is a risk for the baby to have downs, or other problems.

Ahh! Thanks for the info. Her son was born beautiful & healthy Thank goodness.
My doc never mentioned this, so, hopefully I'm in the clear

They usually will want one done if your AFP results aren't great, or if there are other risk factors.

I had an amnio this time around and it is not as bad as it sounds. It is not pleasant but the anticipation is the worst part. I had it because I am 36(advanced maternal age) and had some other risk factors for a chromosonal abnormality. It turned out all is well with this baby

Its normal, and they usually do that test when the mom is over 35 years of age, or if they think something might be wrong.
