donations in memory of a pet?
The owners of the barn where we keep our horses lost their dog last week to cancer. She was a fighter, but ultimately the treatment stopped working. They are heartbroken.
We are pretty good friends with the couple that runs the barn. (Only myself and my good friend keep our horses there, so it's a small environment.) They are huge animal people - they have adopted / fixed feral cats, and I know they plan to adopt another 2 dogs in the somewhat near future (when they are ready). Their dog who passed was a rescue. They're big into animal rescue.
I noticed that you can make memorial donations to North Shore Animal League in the name of a person - OR a pet, and they send a card for you. I was thinking of making a donation in their dog's memory. They'd get a memorial card just saying that we made a donation in Sunny's memory.
Do you think this is appropriate?

Re: donations in memory of a pet?
Thanks!
I wanted to do something special b/c I loved that little dog, too. I don't have time right now to have a dog of my own, and I just loved getting to play with her when we went to the barn to see the horses.
Even when she was sick, she'd still manage a few minutes to run outside, tail wagging to say hello. I think part of her knew we liked seeing her so much that she made the effort to come out of the house for us. Sure, I'm probably overanalyzing it, but she never let us see how sick she was. She'd run out and be happy and then run back inside.
What a special pup.

Re: donations in memory of a pet?
She was a sweetie. A neurotic little (dare I say it?) - um - "mixed breed" and we loved her.
I just made the donation. I know it won't help them feel any better, but I think her humans will appreciate it.

Re: donations in memory of a pet?
It is a very kind gesture, but I would like to make a suggestion. I would not make a donation to NSALA as they do not take back all their animals if adoptions do not work, many are euthanized at municipal shelters. Also, if you go to guidestar.com you can see how much they received in donations..think it is something like $35 million yearly. I would send a donation to a small striving all volunteer organization in the area where they live.

Aww, I know. One of the barn owners said she took him for one last walk. They used to take at least one very long (hour +) walk every day. As she got sicker, she wasn't interested in going out as much... but the day before they put her down (after they made the decision it was her time), she perked up for one more walk. She actually was begging him to take her for a walk. She acted "normal" the whole walk (though she was sick again afterwards). The owners said that she gave them one last gift, knowing it was her time.
