Spinal anesthesia if specifically deeper anesthesia specifically for surgery. An epidural is not enough for a c section because you still can move and have some sensation. Spinal is completely numb and does not allow you to move. The insertion of both is about the same the end result is the difference Chat Icon HTH

Actually, you can have an epi with an "emergency c-section"

So, if they give you an epi during labor and then you have to have a c-section they can just up the dose of the epi.

However, usually for scheduled c-sections they give spinals because they are quicker to take effect.

This is what was explained to me by my Dr. I had an epi for my first c-section and now for #2 they will want to give me a spinal as it will be scheduled.

But, I heard there are more complications from a spinal so I am going to request and epi. Chat Icon

Okay, so with DD#1 I was told that an epidural is a catheder that is put in so they can give you more meds through your labor.
A spinal is a single injection of meds that last a limited amount of time. (like for a c-section)

we just went over this last night in my birthing class. they both use a cathether, they are just inserted into different areas (the spinal is inserted in the dura, the epidural in the lining or some such thing). they also told us that most of today's epidurals combine a spinal with an epi. i am so happy to finally say i learned something in my birthing class!
