Re: RN

I don't know if I count, but I started an RN program (back in '94Chat Icon ) I had 1 semester to go, so I am familiar with a program. But hated being in the hospital, so switched majors. I found it intense, but doable. It was a lot of reading! Exams and practicals, that you have to maintain a certain GPA or you are out.
I don't know how the program you are interested is, but mine involved taking undergrad courses (anatomy & phys., literature, history, psyc, while you take your nursing courses too (which involved hospital rotations). So it was a full course load.

I am not sure I could do it with a newborn, because as an 18 year old, I was giving up going out, and getting sleep to be awake for the long lectures.

HTH, good luck with your choice, I commend you for going back to school!

Re: RN

OK, then that should be easier. I was going to Farmingdale. I found it great to take some sciences courses over the summer....they are shorterChat Icon I took microbiology and physics that way.

I would definitely make an appt with the school in advance to review your courses and make sure u finish what needs to be finished before September. Even with a Bach in Biology, I was still missing 3-4 classes that had to be completed over the summer before school began in Sept.

I went to Stony Brook -- it made more sense for me since I had the pre-req's for the "1st 2 years"; I took 2 years of Nursing and ended up with another Bach Degree.

I've heard good things about Suffolk's Program, as well (however, it's an associate degree only, if that matters to u).

As far as going to school with a newborn -- that will be tough, but I'm sure do-able with determination! AVOID Stony Brook's 1 year accelerated program. It may seem nice to finish in a year, but there's NO time to breathe and it would be nearly impossible with a baby at home.

HTH. FM with any questions. I graduated in May '05 so it's all still fresh in my mind. Chat Icon

Re: RN

Im an RN here. I graduated in may of 05 as well. I graduated from nassaus program. Yes it is intense. BUt it really depends on your schedule. Are you going to be working full time as well and do you have help around the house. My husband at the time would say he barely saw me and if he did i was majorly stressed. Anything is possible if you are determined. Dont let anyone persuade you any other way. Nursing is an awesome profession and i find it so gratifying and just think about the flexibility you will have in the end when all is said and done. Good luck.

I wont be working full-time i would like to work pt but my husband said i dont need to work at all so i can focus on my schooling. I will have help with the baby which makes it so much easier. Is it better to go for my associates or bachelors? either way i will be getting my bachelors im not sure if its worth getting associates so i can be an RN while going for my bachelors...

Re: RN

I have an associates. Truly the only differeance in my hospital is 1000 a year. and thats like a bonus check that is given at one time so when taxed it is really only 630 dollars. Its up to you. I got my associates and figured i can take my time with my bachelors now. Good luck.

Re: RN

there is such a nursing shortage you will get a job anywhere. I have been a nurse 3 years and i am already a nurse manager. Just shows that yes a bachelors does make you more marketable but even without it you can go far. Im in the process of getting mine now but im not gonna rush im actually going to enjoy my family while im in school
