Metformin with clomid?
Has anyone had success with metformin (to make them ovulate) without taking clomid as well? My plan is to start the met/clomid combo, but now I'm wondering if I should start with only the met first.....

Re: Metformin with clomid?
Hey, TTC buddy!
I'm trying that right now. My RE wanted me to go right for the aggressive approach, which would be met/clomid together right from the first month. However, I heard that you can only take Clomid for a maximum of 12 cycles in your LIFETIME. That scared me just a bit, so I opted not to start it just yet, and just see what the Met does on its own.
I go for my first sono since beginning the Met on Monday--we'll see what happens. Keep your fingers crossed for me!

Thanks for your response! Keep me posted on how your sonogram goes!
Anyone else? I am so stressed. I don't know if I should start the met alone or do the met/clomid combo.

Re: Metformin with clomid?
Well. I was on met alone for three months. This was just with my obgyn, so it was just a kind of "lets see what happens" type of thing. After three months I still hadn't gotten my period, so my dr. referred me to the RE. I got a script for provera and had blood drawn. Got a call back later that day that I had ovulated. I believe it was just a coincidence and not really due to the met. So I started clomid right away with the RE. For some women though, it really does work. I am not IR, but have a high testosterone level so they are keeping me on it because of that. Maybe if I was IR, it would have made me ovulate. I also think women who are overweight have a higher success of o'in on met alone because it helps them to lose weight.

Re: Metformin with clomid?
What to do, what to do!! Part of me feels like I should try metformin for a bit to see if it works WITHOUT clomid. But then again, I don't want to "waste" months not ovulating when I could be on the met/clomid combo.

You also might want to take into consideration that metformin can take a few months before it becomes effective. It has to build up in your system and start regulating hormones. Clomid (if you are on the correct dosage) will cause your follies to grow the same cycle you take them. So if your goal is to get pregnant as soon as possible, you might not want to wait for the met to start working. There are no guarantees, of course, with clomid either, but I think the chance of you ovulating with clomid sooner is higher than on met alone.

This is basically what happened with me as well.

Re: Metformin with clomid?
I took Met only and got pregnant. I was on 1500mg extended release. I was told to wait 3 months before ttc. I started the Met waited the 3 months and then got a sticky bean on my third month of ttc (6th month of Met). I stayed on the Met till 14 weeks and my baby is now 2 weeks old. It is possible to get pregnant with just Met for some people. Good luck

Re: Metformin with clomid?
I started taking the Met on Sept. 26th. All along not much was happening and we began discussing our first Clomid cycle for the end of January. My RE sent me in for one last internal sono before we did anything on New Year's Eve and to our complete shock.........we had an egg all ready to go!!!!
We took the HCG trigger shot on New Year's Day, we had an IUI the day after that, and we BD'ed like crazy using Pre-Seed as well.
Long story short.........I got my BFP at 10DPO. Right now I am 4 weeks 4 days pregnant and so far all of my BETA's look good!!
So, give it some time. It's possible to get preggers without the Clomid. Just bear in mind it could take up to 6 months for the Met to have an effect but of course everyone is different. Stay positive, your time will come. Lots and lots of luck!!!!!
