Green spinoff...Online vs. hardcopy of references
I write a publication and we used to print 50,000 copies of said publication. It's a reference-type publication which people refer to constantly, etc.
I wrote a report asking to lower the number so last publication cycle we printed only 20,000.
Now we are looking to stop printing entirely, and have the online version be the only publication (it is now offered online and hardcopy).
But we are faced with a great deal of opposition from people who feel they really want to "hold" the reference publication to find things more easily, etc.
How do you feel about this? Would you prefer having a hard copy of a publication to browse, or prefer an entirely online publication? What about magazines or books?

If the online reference guide had a good search feature, I would be fine with that. I sometimes print off sections I need but rarely need an entire reference volume.
Magazine articles I would read online, books probably not.

Re: Green spinoff...Online vs. hardcopy of references
I NEED hard copies.
When I was writing research papers in college, even if I used journals and articles or books that were avialable online I would actually print them. That's just my quirk.
I get the NYT daily. Now the online version and archives are free for everyone (they are gradually taking away subscriber perks..I don't know why!), but I still mainly read the paper version.
ETA: ANd about grennees I did feel abd using paper unneccesarily, but I cannot function without the paper in my hands. For some reason I absorb so much more.

Re: Green spinoff...Online vs. hardcopy of references
Thats funny I *just* got in the mail yesterday a two book volume of The Blue Book for Building and Construction. 1500+ pages each. Every year we get this glorified hard cover phone book.
I have asked them numerous times to remove us, all the info can be searched on their website and they also have a CD available. I know they also send them to every single person in bigger firms, what awaste...
So my vote is for online or to be sent to only those that request an updated copy.

I prefer online. Our office is totally paperless.

I do a lot of research in my job. I always go to the on-line resource first. The paper is the backup. Searching is 1,000 times easier on-line and I feel the info is more likely to be the most current.
ETS- for "leisure reading" books & magazines, I would want the paper copies.

Office, news, magazines - I could go totally paperless. I cannot bring myself to read an electronic copy of a book. I love every aspect of books - their feel, smell, weight - I just can't get used to the idea of reading from a tablet.

Online. I have a few reference books but I always find it easier and quicker to look up online. Sometimes I will print out a page or 2.

Reading things on-line is worse for your eyes than print. Not everyone has a laptop to read on the train, outside, comfy chair, etc.
I like some things on-line, but if it's a lot of reading, I'm more comfortable reading hard copies.

online for journals and work related resources and research. As Kitty said - searching is much easier online.
However - I love hardcopy books and would never trade them for online. Books are a sensory experience for me that I absolutely adore - the smell, the feel of the pages - all of it. I would be crushed without physical books to read.

Ditto.
And online resources don't take up any space in my already cramp cubicle.

Re: Green spinoff...Online vs. hardcopy of references
If I had my way, the whole world would be paperless. I hate the clutter, the need to shread important documents so I don't have my identity stolen, the need to file stuff- hate it ALL!

Re: Green spinoff...Online vs. hardcopy of references
Online would be my method of choice.
The whole world is on the net these days, this should be no exception.
Although I do agree with a pp, the online version would need a good search feature to make it easy to find specific things.
