Anyone have any experience with Viszlas?
A friend was interested to know about this breed and I have no personal or second-hand experience with them.
Thanks!

Re: Anyone have any experience with Viszlas?
They are in the same group/family as Weimeraners/German-Shorthair Pointers.
My friend has one and she is much like Misty. Extremely active - they walk her in the woods for an hour in the morning. Very Protective They are hunting dogs so they will chase squirrels and rabbits without any thought. They are not as spoiled as Weims tend to be, they were not as favored as Weims in the early years so they are much better with crate-training and seperation anxiety.
That's about all I have. I know my friend got theirs from a breeder in PA. so if you are interested I can get you the name.

She lives out east on a very large property, so the exercise is not an issue. And she is a SAHW, so the dog will have constant attention(save running errands & such). I will let her know about the hunting instinct..she has a lot of trees & small animals on her property.
I think she wants to adopt from the breed rescue, but she is willing to use a breeder if she has to wait too long (a year is her limit). She was also interested in adopting a retired show dog, but I am not sure which breeders do this for this breed.
Thanks!

Obviously, you know she can contact the breed rescue through the AKC. If she is interested in a Viszla, she might want to consider a Weim or GSP...aside from coloring they are almost the same dog.
Good luck to her!

Good luck to her! She is also considering a Weim. She saw a Viszlas with orange eyes & was mesmerized. She also loves the look of the Weim....the grey ghost fascinates her. She has already contacted VCA.org & their northeast breed rescue coordinator. She asked a lot of questions about the breed, etc. I like to get first-hand info as well.
I love that she is willing to wait a year for a rescue to be available.
Thanks for your help!

Re: Anyone have any experience with Viszlas?
We applied and got Misty within a month (she was 8 months old)...someone bought her at a pet store and couldn't handle her anymore so they were taking her to a shelter, the shelter called the lady who does rescue on LI and she called me!
Because they are such high energy dogs and are sold at pet stores, there tend to be alot of them available because people who don't research them don't know what they are like.

Re: Anyone have any experience with Viszlas?
My parents had a Viszla as our family dog growing up.. he was very active and hyper.. we had a hard time training him to be calmer..(we knew the breed was a high energy type..)he would jump on people and bark a lot.. but I think it may have just been him.. not the breed..
he was a beautiful dog and an awesome family pet.. even though he was a little on the crazy side
