Changing the fan on your PC...
Anyone ever do this? Our PC is making a really loud obnoxious noise now - we've opened it up and dusted the fan, it helped in the beginning, but now I'm thinking we need a new one.
Has anyone does this before? Are all the fans a standard size? Can I just buy the fan from best buy and install it myself?

Yeah you should be able to do it yourself. Not all fans are the same size - it depends on the CPU size.
Just take it with you to the geek squad.

Re: Changing the fan on your PC...
According to DH...
If it's the power supply fan, you need a new power supply. You don't open that up.
If it's the motherboard fan on the northbridge, you may have to go to the manufacturer of the motherboard.
If it's the videocard fan (where applicable), you have to go to the manufacturer of the video card.
If it's the CPU fan, you may be able to get it in the store, but you can probably find a replacement online.
If it's an auxiliary fan , you can go to a regular retail store. This would be the easiest to replace b/c it's not attached to anything important. For everything else, they are pretty well attached to their devices, so you need to know what you're doing. DH has replaced his video card fan, but even the new one died.

I have n o idea...there's only one fan that I see....I open the case of the motherboard, and it's towards the top left...it faces outwards and has a silver fan cover?
Should I just take a picture? I'm just hesitant to take the whole CPU to the GeekSquad and get charged an arm and a leg for them breathing on it...

Big small...do you know the sound is coming from there for a fact? What kind of computer do you have (make and model - i can look up your maunual and see your configuration)
more then likely it is the processer fan...replacement will cost about 20 bucks and take a few minutes...

It's an HP but it's refurbished...and I bought it the year of the flood...but thank you so much for the offer!
I guess I'll take it into bestbuy and have them take a look. I'm 99.9% sure it's coming from the fan b/c the minute I hear it, I hit the top of the computer and it stops....I know, I probably, yeah, I shouldn't do it, but it's the only thing that stops it!

Re: Changing the fan on your PC...
If you can take the fan off then take just that with you, no real need to take it all in, unless you want them to do the work for you.
But if you can get it off, you can put on a new one.

Yours too? We have an RMA for ours because it's only 6 months old.
