when you do COBRA

do you get ALL of the perks of your previous insurance carrier. In other words if they were paying for my gym membership will it still be covered by COBRA for the time?

Re: when you do COBRA

Im not sure but I do know when I was pg and DH changed jobs and we were on cobra- we got hit with a 3k bill from the hospital b/c cobra has a deductible for hospitals that we were not aware of b/c our insurance did not have any. so I would call to be sure and see what else they may or may not cover. Cobra really isnt what we think it is. yes they cover most but there are these hidden fee's.

Re: when you do COBRA

COBRA is a continuation of coverage under the employer's group plan. The coverage should be exactly the same as it was while you were employed - the only difference is that you pay the entire monthly premium.

Re: when you do COBRA

COBRA is continuation of health insurance. It should be exactly the same except you are fronting the whole premium.

If your gym membership was paid for through it, then yes, it should continue. If you got it because of your employment, then no.

I have it through my employment so if I went on Cobra I would not have it anymore.

Re: when you do COBRA

Its not exactly the same- Please do yourself a favor and call and find out.

we learned this the hard way having to cough up 3k after having a baby b/c as we were told many many times and fighting this even though our insurance did NOT have a hospital deductable- Cobra does and its 80/20. Our insurance company had a 0 deductible- both DH and I were hospitalized during my pg with our old insurance and didnt pay a dime- we get cobra and hello we now have a deductable.
Even the meds were more money- different deductibles.

Re: when you do COBRA

Sorry, In most cases the coverage is not the same. The deductables are higher and most policies will not cover any meds....

Re: when you do COBRA

The coverage is the same. If you were on COBRA and had different coverage levels, your former employer broke the law. From the DOL website:

Under COBRA, what benefits must be covered?

Qualified beneficiaries must be offered coverage identical to that available to similarly situated beneficiaries who are not receiving COBRA coverage under the plan (generally, the same coverage that the qualified beneficiary had immediately before qualifying for continuation coverage). A change in the benefits under the plan for the active employees will also apply to qualified beneficiaries. Qualified beneficiaries must be allowed to make the same choices given to non-COBRA beneficiaries under the plan, such as during periods of open enrollment by the plan.
