I need help! How much should I charge??

be a "ghostwriter" for DH's boss.

She has a newspaper column and she is THE.WORST.WRITER.EVER.

So she asked me if I would write the articles for her, and she will pay me whatever I want.

How the heck do I decide what to charge her?!?!
Any ideas? By the time spent, by the # of words, etc?? I am clueless, but SUPER excited to do this!!!

Re: I need help! How much should I charge??

how did she get a column when she can't write?

isn't that the pre-requisite for having to write something?

First, I would get an agreement in writing and state what your comp would be if the column got picked up for something else.

Talk to an atty.

She's a doctor...it's a health-related column. I'm wondering if she even gets paid for it....or if SHE paid them to have that column as a form of advertising. Chat Icon

What newspaper is it in? I've been paid per word, sometimes .12 a word...But figure out how many words the columns usually are. If it's 2500 words, that's $300...And depending on how much research you have to do, or people you have to interview, it may not be worth it considering you can never write on a resume that you did it, or take credit for it. You'll have to be really careful about your research since it's her name on the line if you wind up quoting or taking info. from another source without citing.

Thank you! I have to ask what newspaper it is....
I don't care about credit, I'm a teacher (SAHM right now), and this is just a side job to make some extra money. Chat Icon

It would depend on the newspaper...I would charge more for a high-profile newspaper like newsday than i would for one of the free neighborhood newspapers. and i'd say you would do one as a trial before agreeing to doing it permanently--i've found when i figured out how many hours the research-intensive articles took to write (or the ones requiring interviews), it was almost minimum wage...

Yep, editor here! Is it monthly? How long is the work? If it's 800-1,000 wds, I would ask for $200 or $300. Every place is different. I write somewhere for $125 a month at 700 words...but where I work, the writers get paid anywhere from $500 and up for various articles.
