Re: To get a second dog or not to?

Two dogs is a lot of work. The older dog may feel slighted. This happened to us. It took our Peke 1 year to get used to the new puppy and even still you see the jealousy. We wanted two dogs for the same reason, but we still have to keep them separted when we are not home because of fear that they will attack eachother. It also depends on the breed of the dog. Our Peke, is meant to be a loner dog while our Pug is meant to be with other dogs.

Re: To get a second dog or not to?

I have three dogs...now THAT is a lot of workChat Icon

No, but in all honesty when we moved down to NC, we just had Jessi our 4yr old mutt...myself and her were both kinda sad, so DH and I went to the local shelter and adopted Morgan.
At first, Jessi was not happy...she basically stayed away from Morgan....after a month she warmed up to her and now they are best friends...and it was great b/c Jessi helped train Morgan.
This past June we got Riley...once again, Jessi was not thrilled...Morgan took to Riley right away was such a good mommy to her. ...now all three are great friends who love to play with each other.
Is it a lot of work? YES....but if you can commit the time and energy to having more than one dog then do it!

Get a dog older than your dog, do not get a puppy. Go to Animal Care and Control of NYC..they have so many small breeds for adoption. You must take your dog with you.

Re: To get a second dog or not to?

I have 4 and I will tell you that it was harder to introduce the puppy than the older dogs. Shih Tzu's are pretty intelligent dogs, and are very trainable, but at the same time they are not pack dogs, so I am not certain how 2 will act together. When we rescued, we took our oldest alpha dog with us to see how the dogs would act together and that helped a lot.

ETA: Make sure your dog has on a flea & tick collar when you go to the shelters though, as many dogs are stray & neglected.
