One of the givers is Asian, if that helps... I've googled, but not much luck there.

Maybe they were going to give you $600, but then remembered you owed them 20 bucks? Chat Icon

Ok, sorry, that probably doesn't really help, but it's the first thing that came to mind.

That is very generous!

In Chinese, 5 is a number that has been connected to happiness and the pronouciation of 8 in Chinese sounds like the Chinese word for good luck. The number 5 is pronouced "wu" and the number 8 is pronounced "bat".

This is what I found on the web that explains it better:
The five-bat Wu Fu symbol appears frequently in Chinese literature and art. The word for bat and the word for good luck have the same sound, fu. Wu is the word for five, and each of the five bats in the symbol represents one of the five elements - earth, air, fire water, metal - as well as one of the five happiness's - health, wealth, long life, good luck, tranquility. These stylized bats are commonly depicted in red, the color of joy, and surround a prosperity symbol. The common depiction of an upside-down bat symbolizes that good fortune has arrived.

The Chinese enjoy puns and word juggling in literary works, artistic pictures and even vanity license plates. The number “8”, as part of a license plate, means “making a fortune”. There are over a hundred patterns like this in China created by virtue of homophony and imagination.

Cub's description is pretty accurate. I don't know Mandarin but in Cantonese, the number 8 is FAAT. FAAT means "luck" or "fortune". That is why the Beijing Olympics are starting on 8/8/08. Chat Icon

what a great gift, I think its awesome when people try to put something special into a monetary gift.
When we did the fundraiser for my friend one of our patients have her $218, there was some numerology behind it but I don't remember exactly what it was.

I believe in the Indian culture its bad luck to give an exact amount. When I ahve gone to Indian weddings I am always told by colleagues to give something like $201
