what would you do
last night we got invited to a friends house for coffee and cake for their b-day. since its just 2 days notice, would you bring a b-day gift

if it is just for coffee and cake. Then I dont think they expect you to bring a gift. I would just bring a bottle of wine, flowers, or maybe a gift certificate to the movies or some sort of gift certificate that you know the will use.

IMO It doesn't matter about the notice.
Maybe a card and a GC or like the other posters said a bottle of wine.
