Tankleff is out on bail
Regardless of what you think of this case, imagine being close to 40 years old and never having spent a moment of your adulthood as a free man. What do you do first? What questions would you have? He hasn't been totally isolated but he has never owned a cell phone or a laptop and who knows if he has even seen an Ipod. I usually focus on the legal issues but today this is what I am thinking about.

Re: Tankleff is out on bail
i'm sure it has to be an incredibly overwhelming feeling...like the whole world changed and you were left behind.
that reminds me of that movie 'the shawshank redemption" and the old guy, Brooks -- who had spend from like 1904 until like 1950 in prison and he is let out on parole and can't handle life on the outside!

that's what i was thinking, although tankleff went to jail in 1997. things haven't changes THAT much, but enough that he would be out of the loop technologically-speaking.
and someone would need to tell him that grunge is out.

Of course, me being the nerd English teacher that I am... I immediately thought of Boo Radley. But yes, I agree that this would be a VERY disorienting situation.

The Tankleff murders were in 1988 and I believe his sentence started in 1990, possibly 1989. He probably missed grunge completely!

Re: Tankleff is out on bail
It's probably the most important part of his life that he's missed.
He's missed the opportunity to date (or at least seriously date), to start a career, to have a family.
I doubt he's concerned about ipods & cell phones. Also he's been in jail, not on a remote island. I'm sure he's used a computer, had classes, etc to keep up on things.
I would think the most overwhelming thing would be to see old friends who have aged & have kids, knowing I've been left behind.

i'm sorry but LMFAO!!!!!!!!!
...seriously though, it has to be REALLY overwhelming. i can't even imagine. the kid is going to need some MAJOR psych. help - like, say he didn't do it (for arguments sake) he now needs to deal with the fact that his parents were murdered by someone, the person is not caught, tons of people think it is you, you spent 10+ years in jail, you are now free on bail - who knows what the future will bring w/ sentencing, how do you begin to have a LIFE, you'll prob never get married or have kids b/c of what people think of you--- all of these things have to go through his mind. wow.

i really dont remember the circumstances, I was little in 1988 - but I was asking my mom about it yesterday, and she said she always thought he was innocent. thats a shame if he is , spending so much time in jail for something he didnt do.
The TV show Life is about a cop who is framed for murder and gets out 10 or so years later. very interesting.

He def is. I feel so bad for him. My cousin was friends with him when my family lived in Belle Terre. Can he sue anyone for everything he went through?

I am not sure if he would win any lawsuit against the state or county, because there was a jury trial. I guess that if he can prove that they withheld evidence and that the lead detective committed perjury, he may have something. I believe he can go after his sister for his share of the parents' estate. If he takes a deal where he would agree to a guilty plea in exchange for time served, that could affect his rights. There is a lot of talk about the possiblity of a deal like that. I don't think he would take such a deal but there are "experts" who do.

I didn't really follow this case...but it would be horrible if he is innocent and has spent all of that time in jail...what a waste of his life!

he might also have some other grounds having to do with the confession - he was 17 at the time just after his parents death

Re: Tankleff is out on bail
When I was watching him today walk out a free man, I was so happy for him but couldn't help but be sad. I have always believed he was innocent. I cannot even imagine what this man has gone through, and what he will continue to go through. To be released must be as he said a dream come true. Right now he faces an uncertain future but he has fought a long battle and I only hope that the DA closes this case and let's this man go on with his life and that the public let him do the same. As far as the injustices in the case, I hope whomever had a part in this pays for their crimes.

The part of this case that is so terrible is that the evidence points to a deliberate setup. This was not just a case of mistaken identity. Something was rotten at Strathmore Bagels!

ditto
I remember when this happened- and we always followed the case - since I grew up in the next town
when I sent the news link to my Dad in FL today- he wrote back that even my Mom thought he was innocent- and she was one tough cookie

So true, something was/is very rotten in this case. I just hope that he goes free for good. 17+ yrs served was just too much.

Re: Tankleff is out on bail
I grew up in the next town & my circle of friends & Marty's overlapped at all the belle terre parties. There is no way he practically decapitated his mother, he was a very soft person. Not to mention my stepgrandfather shared a passion for racehorses with the strathmore bagels family & when this happened he said Jerry was "the scum of the earth"-that was what all the horse people thought of him. I've always known Marty was innocent & it has always saddened me that his attempts to be freed were shot down. Its a terrible injustice.
