LIRR question
If you take the LIRR during peak hours do you find that you always find a seat or do you have to stand sometimes? I ask cause I am used to taking the subway system during peak hours and I usually stand the whole time.

I always get a seat. On a rare transfer at Jamaica I may have to stand.

Same here. And don't be afraid to ask people to move their sh!t so that you can sit down!

Re: LIRR question
I mostly get a seat. I don't like sitting in a middle seat so I will stand for the ride. That happens maybe once a week but my ride is about 25 minutes so it's not too bad.

Re: LIRR question
Thanks for answering everyone. Good to know most of you have no problem getting a seat. It might be worth the extra money just so I can have a comfortable commute!

Re: LIRR question
I always get a seat. I too was used to standing on the subway and was worried that once I moved back to LI that I would end up standing. I do have to sit in the middle alot but I dont mind.

Re: LIRR question
It depends on what train you take & from what station. I used to live in Bethpage & took a popular train (around 7:30 am) & Bethpage was the last stop, so I rarely got a seat. Most other people were sitting though.
On the way home, if you get to Penn Station before the train arrives, you will get a seat.
If the train is short cars though, many people have to stand.

Re: LIRR question
Always get a seat, but then my stop right now is the first stop/last stop.
Sometimes if I take a different train and transfer at Jamaica, I may have to stand.
But I certainly have no problem asking anyone to move their crap.
I can't believe how rude people are sometimes taking up like 3 seats in the morning and afternoon rush with their stuff.
We recently bought a house in Amity Harbor so I will probably be commuting from Copiague. Anyone know how getting a seat is from there in the AM?

Re: LIRR question
It depends on the train and the station. In the AM, I almost always get a seat. I think once did I have to stand b/c the train was short 2 cars.
In the evening, there are rare times I have to stand, but I usually get a seat. It's those times I'm running for the train as the doors are closing that I may not find a seat.
Also, some lines are far more crowed than others. My brother used to take the train from Mineola and sometimes Mineola is the last stop before Jamaica on a VERY long train. Then he'd almost always have to stand.
Your chances of getting a seat on the LIRR are far, far greater than on the subway most likely.
And like someone else said, don't be shy about asking people to move their bags or feet for you to sit down. Their bags don't pay for a ticket, so I think humans should get priority!

Re: LIRR question
I always get a seat. I haven't had to stand in a very long time. That only happens when the train is short or for some reason they combine trains.
But in the am I am at the first stop, and in the pm I am always at Penn early. I also take an 4:24 train, so I think that makes a difference.
Do not be afraid to ask people to move their stuff. Its just rude when they do that.

I always find a seat...even if I have to sit in the middle of a 3 seater...if I worked all day, I want to relax on the way home.

Re: LIRR question
It's not always a comfortable seat (ie: in a 3 seater in between 2 rather large men or women) but I get a seat unless it's one of those crazy nights that they're cancelling/combining trains and such -

Re: LIRR question
I agree with most people here. I also think the Ronkokoma line is the worst and they could use to add more trains.

Re: LIRR question
I always find a seat I take the Huntington Train which is an hour from Penn. I have never had to stand.
I sometimes think I have to because there are so many people waiting to get on the trains, but in the end, there's always a seat.
There is one exception. 5:46 train is always too crowded and yeah, you may stand, so I just avoid it and take the 5:35 or 6:01/6:08
