Had one of my dogs put down Sunday (long)

I had 2 dogs. One of them only used 3 legs because when we adopted him, the previous owners returned him to NSAL with a broken leg. So the leg never grew and he just held it up, never using it. Well we think in Friday's ice storm, he slipped in the backyard. By Saturday night he wasn't able to walk (the bad leg is in the rear). I just thought he was bruised really bad because you could touch his good leg and he wouldn't yipe. He is a 55 lb dog and my DH had to carry him upstairs to bed. We were up most of the night with him. On Sunday at 5am, I heard my DH trying to get him up to go outside, so I got up. He wasn't able to walk at all and was panting a lot. So we bring him to NSAL (everything seems to happen on the weekend with my dogs) later in the day (the earliest they would take us) for them to tell us he is parylized in his rear and had some trama to his back. Long story short we were in the room for 2 hours going through every option, both of us crying our eyes out, only to realize we had to be humane and let him go. We are heartbroken and I can't stop crying. We went through this less than 2 years ago with my other dog, Toby, that I had for 10 years (and prior to DH). I never thought I'd heal from the grief of losing him. I can't believe we are going through this again. But Nico was only 5 years old. Waaaaaayyyyy toooooo young to have his life over. I hate the previous owners because it's like they sealed his fate when he had his leg broken (we'll never know how it happened, but the fact they returned him says a lot to me). He would hop on one leg, but we knew it would come down to leg/hip/back problems because he was always out of alignment. We just didn't think it was so soon.
Plus I'm a week away from my 3rd trimester carrying twins.
I am terribly worried about my remaining dog. She came into our house being a 3rd dog and loved it. Shortly after, Toby was gone and now her buddy, Nico, is gone. She knows something is up and see's us crying all the time. We just can't get a dog right now due to the babies coming. What can I do to make it okay for her to be an only dog? She is searching the house for him, but just stairs at us when she can't find him. It's heartbreaking. We are going to take her with us whenever we can when we're out of the house. I will be a SAHM shortly. So we are hoping with the new energy in the home, she'll be preocupied.
I never ever thought we'd have to deal with this again so soon after Toby's death and so early in Nico's life. This is the second time in my life where I truly understand what heartbreak actually is.

I am so deeply sorry for your loss. I lost my dog of 15 years last year and it is still so hard. I will keep you in my thoughts.
