Back from the RE...

...and I think it's finally hit me that this is really happening.

DH and I sat down with her and discussed how things were going. It was very strange, though--I thought she'd suggest trying the treatments one at a time. She didn't send me for initial bloodwork, glucose test, anything like that. She wrote me out a prescription for Provera (I haven't had AF in 4 months).

She also wants me to start on the Metformin ASAP. Then, once I get AF, I'll start taking the Clomid AND the Met.

Does this seem like a lot? She said she's read research that says that less than 20% of women w/ PCOS will ovulate on the Met alone, vs. 80% on the cocktail.

Does this sound right to the rest of you? Since I'm new to all of this, I'd like to know what I'm getting into.

Thanks, ladies--I told the RE about all of you, and how you clued me into the fact that I needed to be tested for PCOS. She said I was lucky to have such good friends. Chat Icon Chat Icon

I'm sorry I don't know about the clomid/met combo, but I wanted to wish you the best. It sounds as if she is on top of this and will guide you. And, as you know, the wonderful ladies on here will help you along the way. Good luck Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

First of all - Im glad it went okay. My gyn had originally had me on clomid for a few cycles, I got fed up with him (just wasnt taking me seriously enough) and went to an RE. The RE put me on Metformin right away, along with the clomid. So, another PCOS'er here with the same protocol. (we're now onto IVF and I'm still on the met, just not the clomid).

Also - I saw your other post, the Dr didnt mention that i should change my diet at all on the Met, so I didn't, and I didn't have any problems. I did work my way up the Met though (started at 1 pill a day for 2 weeks, then 2, then finally three).
Good luck!

Re: Back from the RE...

I don't have PCOS so I really don't know much about that, but best of luck to you. Are you going to have any other testing done too? I would ask for cd 3 bloodwork once your period shows up and for an HSG to make sure your tubes are clear before staying on the Clomid for too long. I hope you are part of the 80% and get lucky right awayChat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Back from the RE...

I have PCOS too, and my regular OB/GYN put me on Met alone. However, the Met alone did not work for me, but the Met/Clomid did.

FM me anytime!

Re: Back from the RE...

I actually ovulated once on met alone, it was right when I had my initial consult with the RE. I was supposed to start provera, but they saw from the bw that I had ovulated, so I waited to get AF on my own. Whether it was from the met or would have just happened, no one knows. I had been taking it for a little over 3 mos at that point.
After AF came I started on clomid. The first round didn't do anything, the second round in that cycle I produced one follie, but it took a really long time. This past cycle they upped my dosage to 100mg, and I produced one good follie pretty quickly.
If I am not pg now, then next cycle I will get an HSG and probably IUI.
We wanted to do a couple of cycles as naturally as possible since my only problem was that I wasn't ovulating.
But I am ready to get more agressive now.

She did ask if I wanted to do it, but she also said there there's no indication from my sono that I have any blockages. She said we'll try for 3 months, and if nothing has happened by then, I'll have the HSG.

I'll admit that I'm a big baby when it comes to this stuff, and I was all too happy to pass on it like she suggested. Chat Icon
