Silly SA question

As some of you may know from my post a few days ago, we're going to our first RE appointment on Monday.

I'm guessing DH and I will both have bloodwork, etc. done--do we think they'll also request a SA as well?

And, well, here's my next question--should there be any, um...abstinence leading up to this for the purposes of getting good numbers? Chat Icon

Thanks girls, for letting me ask my embarrassing questions. I know you all know the ropes around here, so thanks for helping a newbie out! Chat Icon

Don't be embarrassed! I would say, yes, they will ask for your DH to get a SA, only because they always want to rule that out first as a problem. As far as abstaining, you should give it at least 48 hours. The recommended range for abstinence is ridiculously wide, like 2-7 days. We abstained for 3-4 days if I remember correctly before my DH's back in May. For my IUI, we did not abstain long enough I think, it was less than 48 hours. Hope that helps, good luck!!!! Re: Silly SA question

If they do not ask you, I would ask them especially if he has never had one before. It is the most innocuous test you could probably give a person during this process and at least he will get SOME pleasure out of it as opposed to us ladies who get poked, prodded, and pried open. You will be able to rule things out early on his end and may save some time. Let him know this may be a possibility if you think he may have some reservations about it.

I would say everything Leslie just said.

I know for us, our RE told DH to make an appointment for his SA, they didn't do it that day.

Yes, he had to have an SA, but he didn't do it at the initial appointment, they gave him a cup and he brought it in a week later.

Hmm--it's a bit of a hike, I'm wondering if they can have him do it that day...

You know what I'm just wondering? This RE is about an hour away, but she's the most respected in the area. Do you think this will be a problem for if we ever have to go for IUI/IVF?

It shouldn't be a problem. In my office they don't take a sample from DH until the morning of my IUI. Also, because mine travels alot, this month, he was able to give a sample ahead of time which they froze. He had to travel this past week when we thought I'd trigger and have my IUI's, but my follies didn't want to grow, so it wasn't an issue after all.

Yes definitely, I remember one cycle my DH may have been away on travel and we had asked about it. Our RE said the count does goes down slightly when they are frozen.
