tips for helping your pup to understand "no" and their name
we've had ava about a week now and she still hasn't the foggiest idea as to her name or what the word "no" means. we trained quinn without a problem with those things, he picked them up quickly and we taught him the same way - firm tone of voice when saying no, and a slap on the hiney, and just constantly repeating their name... any tips for helping her along, she obviously isn't a fast learner with everything

Honestly I would not use a slap on the hiney at this age in such a small dog. Their kidneys are right at their butts and you can have some unexpected side effects with even the smallest and gentlest tap.
Any training needs repetition and reward. I'd honestly start with just spending some time with the pup & repeating her name. when she acknowledges you treat her. As far as "no," when she is doing something wrong remove her completely from the situation.

rather than no, we've been using "leave it" for anything with her mouth and "off" for anything with her paws. It's worked very well for us and the "leave it" really comes in handy when she grabs something she shouldn't have.
