Excessive butt licking - UPDATED

My little guy has been licking his behind like crazy, even waking us up at night because he's doing it so much. It's gotten so that if we tell him no and make him stop, he'll leave the room or go outside so he can continue without us there to stop him!

Has anyone else's dog done this? Could it be his anal glands? I'm thinking of trying to get off work early to bring him to the vet, but thought I'd ask you guys for advice first.

I'd vote for either anal glands or worms. When my kitty does this, she has impacted anal glands, and needs a visit to the vet.

sounds like anal gland problems. DOn't wait to get it taken care of because they can get infected and the abcess can burst. this happend to my doggie and it was not pretty

Definitely sounds like anal glands. I would take him to the vet to have them expressed.

Thanks for the responses! That's pretty much what I suspected, but I was hoping it wasn't. I'm going to call the vet and see when I can bring him in.

The glands thing takes two seconds. bing bang boom violated and they're better lol. I brought Bowzer to have this done and the Dr. did it right infront of me!!!! I was like WAHHHH EW!!!! lol Bowzer didnt seem to mind.

It could be that or maybe an allergy to food. Let us know that the vet says

Take him to the vet, he is suffering, more than likely abcess.

Well, you ladies were right, it was his anal glands - and when they expressed them, they discovered that he has an infection too My poor doggie!

So we got some antibiotics for him, and he should be feeling much better soon. Thanks for your advice!
