Sitting Shiva -help?
Can someone tell me what is customary when going to visit those sitting shiva? Do we bring something (what?), what type of attire is appropriate? how long do we stay?
Our friend's grandmother passed, and we're going by there later today.
Anything else I should know?
TIA!

Most people bring food items - bakery, fruit, etc. Just make sure the food is kosher. Pants are fine to wear.

Re: Sitting Shiva -help?
dont ring the door bell, just walk in. you can bring food- but make sure it is kosher. cookies or a bagel platter is always good. dont bring flowers. dress conservatively. you can stay as long as you can or feel comfortable.
depending on what time you get there, there may be a shiva minyan going on (it's a service). even if you are not jewish, you can participate if you're comfortable or just hang out in another room while it is going on. (but if they are more traditional, then women may not count for a minyan, so then you can be in another room with the other women).

Thank you! This is very helpful.
They're not a very traditional/religious family, but I wanted an idea of what is customary.

a food platter is fine. the people that are grieving shouldn't be cooking(that's how it was explained to me). you could stay 30 min or 3 hours. that's up to you

I have found that most people are traditional when it comes to following shiva customs.

Re: Sitting Shiva -help?
By the end of shiva I'm usually hoping for something healthy because of all the cakes and cookies that people bring.
