How long is too long to be put on hold?

My daughter is sick so I just called her pediatrician to make an appt. for today. An automated service answers the phone and puts you on hold until someone can pick up. I timed it, and was on hold for 11 minutes. Is that too long? I'm wondering if I should complain to my doctor (it's his practice)...

Last year, my daughter had a horrible accident and after calling 911 I decided to call my pediatrician as well to let him know what was going on. I was on hold for about 15 minutes before hanging up. Chat Icon I was livid by the time I got to his office and he (my doc) was beyond furious that no one answered. He lectured his staff in front of me. Chat Icon

ETA: maybe I am overreacting?
Chat Icon But 11 minutes feels like an eternity, ya know?

for a doctor's office, anything longer than 3 or 4 minutes is too much. ESPECIALLY a pediatrician's office.

for other businesses, like credit cards, i understand long waits.

I used to use a big peds practice and had the same problem, it is too long to be on hold. It means they are under staffed to field all the calls coming into the office. To me it is unacceptable. I would mention it, especially if it bothered him so much last time. He won't about the issue till someone brings it up to him.

I don't think you're overreacting at all. I think that's awful. Not only would I complain to the doctor, I'd let him know it's NOT the first time it's happened. I'd also let him know that you'll have to find another practice if it becomes an ongoing problem.
