OOS Christmas gifts!!

hi girls. could use some creative ideas and knew to come to you!!

my big brother lives OOS this will be the 2nd christmas that were not going to be together since he's moved. we used to do semi-big gifts for each other but since the move i got engaged and am totally broke from saving and he bought a house so all his $$ is going to that. so i really wanted to do something THOUGHTFUL.
Since i love to cook and bake and used to all the time when he was home i was thinking about making some of the classics and sending it down to him. but heres my ?..

HOW?!?!?! how can i send food that can be perishable? is there a way to jar items?

also any other ideas if i cant think of a way to send what i wanted?? im up for anything!

hmmm. i'm not sure how to mail perishables. i think it probably depends on what you are mailing. i remember getting brownies and cookies sent to me in the mail when i was in college with no problem.

if you're thinking something like a meal, i think you'd need to do some research online perhaps for some containers with ice that you can mail. i would think they make them considering you can order food like omaha steaks, etc.. and have them delivered to your house. i'd try googling.

You might also call your local FedEx or UPS Store to see what they suggest or how they go about sending those kinds of things. They could probably give you a lot of information as well.

If it's something that won't break by being jostled and won't go bad by not being refrigerated (cookies, muffins, etc), you can put it in tupperware to keep it fresh and mail it overnight or 2 day priority. That's worked well for me in the past!

Here's How:
Ship in a sturdy box.
Pack with a cold source, i.e., frozen gel packs or dry ice.
When using dry ice:
Do not touch the dry ice with bare hands.

Do not let it come in direct contact with food.

Warn the recipient of its use by writing "Contains Dry Ice" on the outside of the box.
Wrap box in two layers of brown paper.
Use permanent markers to label outside of the box. Use recommended packing tape.
Label outside clearly; make sure address is complete and correct.
Write "Keep Refrigerated" on outside of the box.
Alert recipient of its expected arrival.
Do not send to business addresses or where there will not be adequate refrigerator storage.
Do not send packages at the end of the week. Send them at the beginning of the week so they do not sit in the post office or mailing facility over the weekend.
Whenever possible, send foods that do not require refrigeration, e.g., hard salami, hard cheese, country ham.
Tips:
Sturdy boxes can be purchased through moving companies, pack and ship stores, and office supply stores.
Frozen gel packs can be found at grocery stores and drugstores.
Rolls of brown wrapping paper can be purchased through paper supply companies.
Using waterproofed markers will prevent what you write being washed away while being shipped.

I sent bagels to 2 different people no problems. I wrapped each bagel in alumnum foil, then in a ziplock bag. Froze them. Packed them frozen, shipped them 2 day and then arrived still frozen.

I didn't mark the box at all aside from the address.
