Very sad.

These kids with little driving experience just think they are invincible on the roads until its too late.

Re: Article about the HAlloween tragedy in Smithtown (HS Students)

there are rumors that they were speeding backto make it back to school in time.

and that's a corner/street that I travel on VERY often. and the school is about a mile or 2 from my house, AND I was at the school on the day that it happened (but didnt know it had happened)...

Re: Article about the HAlloween tragedy in Smithtown (HS Students)

It's so tragic, but I'm really not surprised. That stretch of road is incredibly dangerous. I went to school at that HS and had several near accidents since it's a stretch that goes up to 55, and it's very straight and easy to speed on. Plus, it has all the high school drivers, which usually aren't the safest.

I remember rushing back to campus, or off campus to beat the influx of seniors at McDonald's, the deli, and Bagel Boss many times.

So sad. Hopefully the state will do something to make that road a bit safer now.

This is so very sad. The younger brother of one of the teenagers who was killed is in my daughter's class and has been for the past five years. I know the family and can't imagine what they are going through. It is a tradegy for all those involved. But I have to say I am glad that seniors are no longer allowed to leave the campus during the school day.

Re: Article about the HAlloween tragedy in Smithtown (HS Students)

I can personally relate to this story being a Smithtown graduate myself.

We had 42 minutes between classes and we went out all the time too. We usually went places that were within a few minutes ride back to school. If you ventured out onto that part of Jericho, chances are you went somewhere that was going to take you too long to get back. I would not be surprised if he were speeding back for class.

I, myself, got my car up to 105 miles per hour along that stretch. I thought I was invincible once too Chat Icon

DH's neighbor got in a terrible accident in that spot and lost most of his leg at 18 years old. One quick move changed his life.

This could have happened to anyone, anywhere. I hate that it happened in Smithtown, but I appreciate that it is getting attention by kids. All kids that drive need to understand the seriouness of their own actions and how it can affect others not just themselves.

I Chat Icon for all the families involved and hope that it may stop even one more speeding car in the future.

How horrible for all of the families involved, the parents whose sons were killed because of an inexperienced driver & the parents who have to not only mourn their son but now have to clean up the aftermath.

Personally, I feel that a lot of teens are not mature enough to drive at 16 or 17 years of age. Kids feel invincible at that age & that is very dangerous.

One of the kids killed in the accident was my mom's co-worker's Nephew. She lived a few houses down from them and they were very very close. She got the phone call while at work, and has been a mess ever since. My mom said that she was a disaster when she got the call, they had to take her out of the building it was so bad.

I just think the whole story is SO SO sad. Chat Icon

I feel badly for the driver too. This is a kid. He is 17 and he has to live with the knowledge that his bad decision killed three people. What a horrific burden. I wonder what good will come out of suing him and his father...?
