Moving out-of-state and DMV

Does anyone know if you notify your insurance first or go to DMV and change license, regi, etc.?

Where are you moving to? Each state has a different set of steps. I would check with the DMV for that state. Chat Icon

NC. I looked on their DMV and did not see what should be done first. I have nothing else to really do, so I guess I'll take a trip over and ask.

Re: Moving out-of-state and DMV

hmm...this is what I found.

http://www.dmv.org/nc-north-carolina/new-to-north-carolina.php

It says you need to show proof of coverage in order to register your new vehicle (i'm assuming they mean with your new address). So I would do that first, have the ins. company send you a temporary insurance card and then head to the DMV as the site says.

Good luck!

I've been procrastinating doing this for almost 2 months now! urgh

You pretty much always have to change your insurance first. You have to show proof of insurance in order to register your car in the new state.

In NC, be prepared, you will have to pay tax on the current value of your car in order to register it there. NY and NC don't have a reciprocal arrangement. When I moved to NY from NC, it was SO expensive to register my car. I had to pay almost $900 in tax. Chat Icon

We moved to IL and did not have to pay tax only because our car was older. If it was a lease or had been bought within a certain # of years we would have had to pay tax too.

You're probably going to have to pay tax on it.

Even if the car is a lease you will get taxed...bring cash with when you go! bring a few hundred just in case.
Also call the insurance company first
Then you will need to have a copy of the title sent to the DMV, b/c NC holds titles.
So I had to wait three weeks to register my car, since I had to wait for the title.

Yes I have a lease too; the DMV will not register your car until they have the title, b/c NC holds titles. So you have to call your car company and request a copy of the title to go to the DMV!

Yup!

And you shouldn't necessarily have to pay the tax in cash. Call the DMV to see what forms of payment they accept. In NY, they accept debit and credit cards, so I paid with my debit card.

The two DMV's here in High Point, don't take credit cards, cash or checks I believe. Dh had to run to the ATM when we tried to register our cars

Re: Moving out-of-state and DMV

I had to make 3 trips to the DMV when we moved to NC. Also, make sure your SS card is changed to your married name already...that held me up.

And there is a written test given to get your license...get your study book outChat Icon

Re: Moving out-of-state and DMV

I lived in NC for many years. You have to prove insurance first (found out the hard way!!!). So make sure address is correct on your insurance paperwork. You will need it to go to the DMV.

They will probably ask you to take a test drive too.

Re: Moving out-of-state and DMV

You can get a form from DMV requesting to get the title and then just call your leasing company and ask for a fax number and send it to them. We had to do that when we moved to NJ. It was a PITA but it was the only way we could register the car. It took about 2 weeks. I also wouldn't cancel your insurance in NY until you register your car in NC because then your NY license becomes suspended (we learned that the hard way).

I requested a copy of the title.

So that means I will have to go to DMV more than once.

First to register my car (once I get my title. Then I need to change my insurance to NC, then go back to DMV to get my license.

Yup I moved from NY to FL and had to go twice already, once to get my license and once to get the letter to fax to the leasing co. so they can send my title to the dmv. I'm still waiting to go back one more time to get my license plates (as soon as the stupid leasing co. sends my title.. they said it could take up to 60 days)!

AND I now pay $30/month in TAX on top of my car payment!!!!! Chat Icon

Yup and you know what the kicker is....there are two separate places you have to go...one to register and one to take your drivers license test!

Re: Moving out-of-state and DMV

we called insurance first - since we wanted to make sure we were covered during the drive out west. GEICO said that we were covered for 30 or 60 days after we moved - something like that

We had to pay the dreaded tax in CA, as well.
