I failed the 3 hour glucose test. The nurse I spoke with said I have to see a nutricianist (sp?) and get the one touch to test my blood everyday :( I called my insurance and they don't cover that Chat Icon This really sucks. Has anyone else had GD and did it affect that baby at all??? I am very worried Chat Icon

ETA I just read What to expect and it scared the crap out of me....please tell me that they are talking about worst case senario....

Re: I have Gestational Diabetes

I had GD and it wasnt that bad..not sure how bad you failed..for me i just barely failed - the dr said if i was pregnant a year earlier i would have passed bc the lowered the numbers since then..anyway, yes it was annoying but you just have to watch what you eat with the sugars. I went to the nutritionist and tried to follow it as best I could but I didnt get myself crazy with it..I think if you just watch what you are doing you will be fine. My daughter was born at a 7lbs 12 oz so she wasnt too large - which i know is one of the concerns..think of the one good thing that comes out of this - your dr wont let you go late bc of the gd so you know by your due date you will have your dc. hth

Re: I have Gestational Diabetes

I had GD, and my baby is now 6wks old and she is perfect!!! They kept scaring me with stuff, they kept saying how big she was and how their lungs dont develop as soon as a reg. baby. Well my baby was a peanut and her lungs were normal.

I was able to control my GD with diet, I went to a nutrionist who was great... The first one i went to was at Madonna -was not crazy about, so went to a different one with north shore and they were great. The N.S. had you sit threw two classes and taught you about GD, and then sat down and went over a diet.. Madonna just gave me a diet ==which was horrible and turned out it was really for a person who was diabetic, not GD. I also had to stick my finger 4 times a day, which wasnt soo bad the machines dont hurt.

Oh about the machine... Madonna gave me a hard time about one and told me to call ins and do research --pain in the @zz.. the NS place did research for me and had one for me to take home my first time going there. If you have any questions you can FM, ill be happy to help you

Re: I have Gestational Diabetes

I had it. My daughter was born 5 weeks early, not because of my GD, and her lungs were fine. She had no breathing problems.

Meet with the Nutritionist--you will be glad you did--they will put you at ease. They will give you idea on what to eat and what not to eat...

Diet and exercise can really make a difference. If you need a meter, feel free to let me know, i have 3 extra ones (I am a diabetic and get sent meters from all kinds of companies!)

You will be fine--just look at your baby as your reward! And the great thing about GD----once you have the baby--it is gone.

Re: I have Gestational Diabetes

I have it..don't panic and know that there is nothing you did wrong to cause it..thats what I did first and to be honest it was for nothing. I met with the nutritionist, through Winthrop and they gave me a monitor. She also went over foods I can have, which is pretty much stuff I ate before, just much more controlled portions. Gotta watch the carbs. Thos 100 calorie pack snacks became my best friend.
I was doing great controlling it with diet, but the further I have gotten in this pregnancy, the harder it became to control my fasting number and I was put on insulin, just one pill a day before dinner, and it worked.
My baby is normal size, she is not measuring any bigger, she is right on target for her due date.
Go speak with the nutritionist and if they don't give you a monitor look in the store circulars, CVS and other pharmacies have the monitors, actually CVS has like three in their circular this week for $30.
Good Luck and FM if you have any questions!!Chat Icon

Re: I have Gestational Diabetes

I have GD and my baby girl is just fine. I had a Bio Physical Profile on Thursday and she scored 10 out of 10. She's in the 66th percentile for weight and everything has been perfect so far thank God. As long as you treat the GD with diet and insulin if prescribed you should be good. I think the stuff posted in What to Expect is worst case scenario. FM me if you have any questions.

Chat Icon Chat Icon Hey don't worry you'll be fine and baby. You can manage it through diet. My mom had GD with my little brother who is 11 now. It goes away once you give birth and my lil bro is fine.Chat Icon

I had GD with my first pregnancy (not with my 2nd however) and don't let it worry you. If you have it under control (mine was controlled with diet alone), you and your baby should be fine. I had a strict diet and checked my blood 4 times a day. I hated every minute of it (not as much the diet but the scheduling and the advance preparation of my meals). My dr had me monitored with weekly/biweekly non-stress and growth sonos to make sure baby didn't get too big. My son was born 3 weeks early (doubt related to GD because my 2nd son was also born in his 37th week) and was 7lbs 1 oz. He did have hypoglycemia as a result of the GD (even though my GD was so controlled they questioned me even having it at one point). He was in the NICU for about 5 days. We was on IV sugar water until he could stablize his own blood sugars. It was sad to see him on all those IV's and monitors but it was really a non-serious condition and I am grateful that is all that was wrong.

I haven't has my glucose test yet, but I can imagine how scared I would be. However, I keep reading how manageable GD is with proper nutrition and careful attention. I think you'll feel better once you meet with your nutritionist. Try not to let it worry you! Chat Icon
