1st trip to the RE

What can I expect on my first trip to the RE?

I have an appt. at the end of November. Was diagnosed by my GYN as having PCOS about 4 months ago (however, I'm hearing now that I was supposed to have bloodwork to confirm, which I never did... Chat Icon ).

What can I expect the first time around? Does it run like a regular GYN appointment? Or is it different?

I'm a worrywart, so please put my mind at ease! Thanks a bunch! Chat Icon

Re: 1st trip to the RE

I don't have PCOS but I went for my first visit to an RE two weeks ago. He basically reviewed all my prior test work, did a sonogram and talked to me about our options. I am a little older so he wanted to understand how aggressive we wanted to get. We decided on the next step - which is doing a cylce of clomid plus AI. I am set to take my 3 CD blood testing on Tuesday to determine how "old" my ovaries really are and then I will start clomid later that day.

Him and his staff also talked about how the office works in terms of who & when to call regarding our next few steps.

Not really a big deal - more an information gathering session I would have to say.

Good Luck!

I'm new at this too! Just went to RE two weeks ago. It was a standard inital intake. They make you fill out a dozen forms and then discuss what could be wrong that doctor's opinion on what they'll do to treat it. They took blood from me and DH to rule out nasty things like hepatitis and hiv and then tell you to call on the first day of AF to schedule u/s. Then the fun begins. I know the more experienced ladies here will tell you all the questions to ask which had I know about sooner I woulda asked too!!! Goodluck to you...this long road is so much better with those going through the same thingChat Icon

Re: 1st trip to the RE

I filled out our paperwork in advance and sent it in. I also picked up a copy of my records from my OB/GYN so they had a source of reference. You may wish to get that from your doctor if you havent already. After I explained why I was there, the doctor did an exam, made a diagnosis, called for CD3 blood work and scheduled my surgeries. I do not have PCOS though. I would expect and exam and blood work. Good luck!!!

Re: 1st trip to the RE

On my first RE visit, we talked for about an hour. Then he gave me a diagnosis, gave me a prescription for CD3 bloodwork and also some other diagnostic tests (HSG, endometrial biopsy).

I also got mailed the paperwork (it is A LOT) to mail back and got copies of my records from my OB/GYN sent to him.

Its going to seem overwhelming, but just take one thing at a time. And remember, any questions, we're here!

Good luck!

PS - If your OB saw the pearls on your ovaries, they probably could have just diagnosed you w/o bloodwork. There is no real "test" for PCOS. They diagnose it when they see the pearls and when certain levels are elevated or off.

Re: 1st trip to the RE

At the first visit, we filled out a bunch of paperwork. (it was supposed to be mailed but we never got it)
We talked to the doctor for awhile and then I got about 10 vials of blood drawn.
Make sure your RE gets your records from your ob/gyn, and the results of any tests you might have had.
