does putting bleach down your drain do anything?
 is it bad, good, neither? just to clean out the actualy drain..

Vinegar and baking soda is very good and good for the environment.

Well, I used to mop my floors with bleach in my old apartment because I had white ceramic tile and white grout. When I was done with the mop bucket, I'd dump the bleach/water combo down the toilet. My landlady had the plumber come for the toilet because it was running. He asked "Does anyone actually use this toilet?" She said "Yes, why?" He said "It's got the cleanest pipes I've ever seen!" So I guess it does something!
