Gift Giving Question

Ok, my older sister went back to school and is graduating in December as a Massage Therapist. Now, since I was always the younger one (we are 5 years apart) I'm sure she got jipped on gifts from me in the past.

Perfect example is her wedding. I was only 18 at the time and no idea about real proper etiquette. I think I gave her like $100 bucks (I was not invited with guest). When my wedding came around her family (her, husband, son and pregnant with #2) gave me $500 as a gift.

I have always taken care of her children when it's come to gift giving because I know more now.

But I'm stuck with this gift. What is the going rate? $500 sounds like too much right?

Re: Gift Giving Question

$500 for a graduation does sound a bit steep.

Do you definitely want to give her cash? Do you know what her plan is for after graduation (as far as a new job or whatever is concerned)? Is there anything you can do to assist her with that?

Re: Gift Giving Question

500 is a lot... but if she is graduating in December - maybe you can buy something really nice and make it a combo holiday/graduation gift?

Maybe a massage table? Maybe some really good massage oils and some relaxing music she can play for her clients together with a gift certificate for her to be treated to a massage? Maybe a full spa day for the 2 of you to spend time together, have lunch and bond?

I am just not a fan of giving cash.Chat Icon

Can you afford $500? If yes, I do not think it's too much at all for your sister.

She does already have a massage table, and I'm not really sure which "oils" she would prefer. But these are some great ideas and definitely got me thinking about alternative ideas other then cash.

I know her plan is to open up her own "spa" so maybe I'll do some digging to see what she "needs" to get started.

Thanks for your help girls. It's really appreciated.

I agree. If you can afford it, do it but don't try to match her..you may be in different financial situations.

You being 18 at the time of her wedding doesn't mean anything. She was older, more established than you and did what she could afford most likely.

Assess it for what it is now. I'm sure a person with two kids could appreciate the cash.

One other suggestion is give your sister and her hubby a weekend away at a hotel and offer to watch the kids.

I agree with Wendy. I wouldn't pick the amount based on past gifts that you exchanged but on what you would like to do for her now.

Since she wants to do her own spa I would think about getting her things that would help her set up -- aromatherapy candles, ipod with docking station for relaxing music, one of those white/lab style jackets with her name on it -- things like that maybe?

And I love the weekend away suggestion - I am sure she and her DH could use some time alone after she finishes school and before she starts on her next venture.

Re: Gift Giving Question

I don't know if I would give cash for a graduation. What about a good amount on a gc for a store where she'll be buying her supplies for her new career?
